WLPD, DEA host drug take back event Saturday
West Linn Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency will host a Drug Take Back event at the West Linn police station,
22825 Willamette Drive, Saturday.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Police personnel will accept for destruction over the counter drugs, prescription medications and illegal drugs. "It is free, confidential and safe, police said.
"This program takes unused or unwanted drugs from the supply chain" said West Linn Police Chief Terry Timeus., "It also provides for the safe destruction of them, keeping them out of our water."
This program addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, according to the DEA.
"Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
"Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential safety and health hazards.
