Money from Oregon Cultural Trust will fund access to early childhood music education

PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP FILE PHOTO - West Linn's Youth Music Project aims to provide music education for all, regardless of financial situations. The Youth Music Project (YMP) in West Linn received a substantial boost Tuesday, Aug. 22, when the Oregon Cultural Trust announced a $13,565 grant to support YMP's early childhood music and art education courses for low-income kids.

The Cultural Trust distributed a record total of $2.94 million in grant funding for YMP and 135 other cultural nonprofits, like the Oregon Arts Commission and the Clackamas County Arts Alliance.

Youth Music Project is based at the old Willamette Christian Church Property on Willamette Falls Drive and aims to provide music education for all, regardless of financial situations. The grant will help fund tuition assistance for YMP's early childhood programs.

"We've seen a need extensively in early childhood (ages 1-5), so (the grant) is kind of to continue to develop that program," YMP Executive Director Travis Magrane said. "This year alone we have 276 enrollments in early childhood and 50 percent receive tuition assistance."

Magrane added that some grant funds will also be used to create new evaluation tools for staff development.

"It's a combination of things, but really the big thing is (funding) continued access and the strengthening of the program," Magrane said.

This was YMP's first request for a grant from the Cultural Trust, according to Magrane.

"We're really thrilled to partner with them," he said.
