Malee joins Tidings staff
Recent University of Oregon graduate arrives in West Linn
Patrick Malee knew he wanted to be a journalist back when he first started working at his high school newspaper in Evanston, Ill. What he didnt quite realize was that the journey would lead him all the way to the Pacific Northwest, first in Eugene as a student at the University of Oregon and now as the West Linn Tidings newest reporter.
Malee will cover the West Linn-Wilsonville School District for the Tidings while also writing features.
I got into journalism to tell peoples stories in a way thats both accurate and engaging, Malee said. I couldnt be more excited to learn about the West Linn community and help share what makes it tick.
Malee moved to Portland in the fall of 2012 after spending his first post-graduate summer as an intern at the Eugene Register-Guard.
The bright lights of the skyline immediately felt like home, and since moving he has spent much of his time exploring the ins and outs of the city.
That enthusiasm now spreads to West Linn. Malee is particularly excited to engage with the citys community and learn his way around town like a new resident.
While studying journalism at the University of Oregon, Malee worked for three years at the campus newspaper, The Oregon Daily Emerald, as both a sports reporter and editor.
During the summer of 2011, he traveled to Ghana and interned at the countrys largest newspaper the Daily Graphic.
We are excited to welcome Patrick to our team at the West Linn Tidings, said Lori Hall, editor of the West Linn Tidings. His sincere interest in the human spirit will bring heart and depth to our coverage of the city.
Managing Editor Martin Forbes agreed.
We had more than 100 people show interest in this position, Forbes said. It is quite the tribute to Patricks abilities and what other people had to say about him that he rose all the way to the top. We are very pleased to have him join us.
In his free time, Malee enjoys watching professional basketball, discovering new music and reading.
