City could grow with family-oriented businesses
The Kids Dentist gives input, advice for economic development
The city of West Linn is continually working to determine how to best help local businesses grow and be more successful. In support of this, the West Linn City Council and staff have been holding meetings with local business owners and community leaders to listen to their needs and ideas.
City Councilor Jenni Tan and Economic Development Director Chris Kerr recently met with Dr. Dana Anthony Yip of The Kids Dentist.
Yip is an involved community member who operates a pediatric dentistry practice at 18676 Willamette Drive. In 2013, his practice celebrated its 10th year.
Tan said, Dr. Yip is actively engaged in and passionate about the community in which he lives and works, and that gives him great insight into our citys business environment.
A contributor to the community, The Kids Dentist regularly donates to support school, community and philanthropic activities. Yip is active and connected, often participating in community functions. Yip has been a longtime sponsor of Music in the Park, setting up a booth and providing activities or treats for kids. He has also contributed for a number of years to the MOMS Club of West Linns Santa Brunch, as well as donated to the WL-WV Education Foundation and numerous auctions, including the Stafford Primary School auction.
Professionally, Yip serves on the medical staff at Legacy Emanuel and Kaiser Permanente hospitals. He is an active member of the Oregon Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association and Clackamas Dental Society.
Yip treats children from infancy through adolescence and specializes in making what can sometimes be an intimidating experience into an adventure. His staff is a mix of seven full- and part-time employees who engage with children in a safari-themed office, complete with toys, technology, a child-sized entrance to the exam area and animals - including Yoda the chameleon.
Since The Kids Dentist is the only practice in West Linn that caters specifically to children, Yips business is often supplemented by referrals from other dentists and word of mouth. Some patients come from as far as the coast to make use of his experience and expertise with children, including those with special needs. Many of his patients are familiar with his practice because of his involvement in the community.
In addressing the citys questions about economic development, Yip was prepared with ideas for improving the business climate. Citing the family-centric atmosphere in West Linn and the success of his business, he thinks there are opportunities for the city to brand itself as a place for businesses that serve children and parents. For example, Yip said the city could actively market and recruit businesses that cater to the needs of families.
He also commented that businesses and residents alike would benefit from an improved look and feel along Highway 43 and a more cohesive strip of businesses through that corridor. Further, Yip pointed out that community art, perhaps donated or loaned by local artists, would improve the appearance of the area.
Yip is supportive of more positive redevelopment in the city, noting that many people in West Linn have to leave the city to receive medical care, conduct business or purchase staples. He proposed that the citys economic development department could identify local businesses successfully operating in other metro area cities and recruit them to open a second location in West Linn, perhaps providing or connecting them with the support services they need to expand. Yip said that if the opportunity arose, he would expand his own business, perhaps constructing a bigger space and changing locations within West Linn.
These outreach visits and the conversations they generate are valuable tools for the West Linn Economic Development Department.
