Best of the 2013 police blotter
The staff at the West Linn Police Department field all kinds of crazy calls, from kids refusing to go to school to mistaken identities to ducks trying to cross the road. While officers also respond to many calls that are serious in nature, the following is a look at the lighter side of crime in the city.
Information for the public safety column comes from the public records of the West Linn Police Department. Authorities filed reports on the following incidents in 2013:
1/4 8:06 a.m. A Port-a-Potty was undesired in front of a home in the 3500 block of South Road.
1/4 9 a.m. A 15-year-old sister and a 19-year-old brother were going at it. Mom and dad intervened.
1/5 7:36 p.m. A subject wearing an orange shirt, face mask, dark sweatpants and carrying a pillowcase was walking around looking in bushes in the 21500 block of Lupine Court.
1/9 10:16 a.m. Door-to-door solicitors near Horton Road and Serango Drive made one resident feel weird.
1/9 9:29 a.m. A small furry black animal was seen crawling along southbound I-205 near 10th Street.
1/12 1:17 a.m. Two drunken women knocked on a door in the 22800 block of Willamette Drive just to say hi.
1/12 2:37 p.m. Three teens jogging in the median along northbound I-205 south of 10th Street were out of gas.
1/12 3:40 p.m. A man with binoculars was acting strangely in the 1300 block of Fourth Street.
1/15 1:14 p.m. A 15-year-old is refusing to go to school.
1/15 1:24 p.m. A resident near Hillcrest and Marylhurst drives is constantly putting rocks and sticks in the road to slow down traffic.
1/17 11:52 p.m. A man in the 22700 block of Johnson Road reported a suspicious vehicle in front of his home parked for five to 10 minutes. Police found the callers daughter sitting in the vehicle.
1/23 4:14 p.m. Three high schoolers were hanging out near Cornwall and Warwick streets. A caller just wants them to move along.
1/25 6:33 p.m. A reckless driver in the 21700 block of Salamo Road was a lost pizza driver who was driving a new car.
1/28 1:32 a.m. A mother called police wanting advice regarding her daughter staying with her ex-boyfriends new girlfriend.
1/31 10:05 p.m. A man came to a door in the 4000 block of Serango Court, asked the homeowner if she owned a rabbit and then left.
2/1 10:29 a.m. A woman wearing a bright red bathrobe and pajama bottoms raised concerns at McDonalds on Eighth Court.
2/4 10:36 a.m. A 20-year-old son was pitching a fit, yelling and throwing things.
2/6 1:57 a.m. Banging was heard from an empty duplex in the 1400 block of Village Park Place. It was a new tenant doing some late-night painting.
2/6 3:55 p.m. Juveniles on the corner of Exeter Street and Southslope Way were smoking something.
2/8 8:37 p.m. A pushy subject barged into a home in the 2800 block of Jolie Pointe Road saying he was there for a meeting. He was at the wrong house.
2/13 4:56 p.m. Young kids were throwing paper airplanes at a vehicle in the 1900 block of Rockridge Drive.
2/15 4:54 p.m. Rude kids are making vulgar gestures near Maxfield Drive and Winkel Way.
2/18 1:15 p.m. A suspected transient sitting down in the 4100 block of Mapleton Drive was really a construction worker stepping away for a private phone call.
2/18 8:01 p.m. A man drinking a beer and sitting by a pool in the 1600 block of Village Park Place was deemed suspicious.
2/19 8:28 p.m. A woman received a suspicious box in the mail addressed to her from an unknown person that contained a game and three paper towels.
2/20 6:44 p.m. A man peeking into windows in the 2000 block of Tompkins Street is also selling steaks.
2/20 11:49 p.m. A character seen in the 3300 block of Summerlinn Drive was looking at vehicles and ogling a mans wife.
2/21 9:49 a.m. A dog was digging holes along the beach at Mary S. Young State Park.
2/26 7:57 a.m. A feisty man walking his dog near Trillium Creek Primary School yelled at a womans parking job.
2/28 12:28 p.m. A man in the 1400 block of Buck Street received a suspicious package containing checker pieces.
3/1 5:16 p.m. A man and women were disputing over the discipline of their children.
3/7 1:48 p.m. Unknown men were trying to access a yard in the 6200 block of Barlow Street. They were men a womans husband had called to inspect their deck.
3/8 3:58 p.m. A mother is concerned her adult sons friends are taking advantage of him.
3/12 8:23 a.m. A woman crouching down and rubbing her hands in the dirt near Sunset Avenue and Willamette Falls Drive was deemed as acting odd.
3/19 3:08 p.m. An elderly woman in the 2200 block of Sylvan Way is upset her son-in-law took her car away because he believes she shouldnt drive.
3/22 4:23 p.m. A driver of a vehicle was seen freaking out near Hidden Springs Road and Willamette Drive. Drugs were suspected.
3/22 7:58 p.m. A hanger found in a driveway in the 1500 block of Sixth Street caused suspicion.
3/24 7:32 p.m. Two people who appeared lost and did not speak English well appeared at a residents door. They were two exchange students.
3/27 1:11 a.m. A suspicious vehicle driving up and down the 3800 block of Horton Road was a teen dropping off his girlfriend.
3/30 5:16 p.m. Food was reported missing from a home. Subject suspects kids let friends come to house while out of town. Nothing was missing except food.
4/2 10:06 p.m. The doors and windows of a home were found open in the 3900 block of Kenthorpe Way. The homeowner was found sleeping on a sofa and was trying to dry out carpet he just cleaned.
4/3 5:54 a.m. A suspected prowler was heard in a home in the 22700 block of West Bluff Court. It turns out the homeowners cats turned on the TV.
4/5 8:54 p.m. A teenager was harassing a mother.
4/12 12:46 p.m. A rude neighbor in the 1000 block of Snidow Drive threatened to toss another neighbor into a trashcan.
4/12 4:45 p.m. A neighbor seen hitting his or her head against a porch was just frustrated.
4/12 9:26 p.m. Twenty teens seen running up and down the 2900 block of Winkel Way were just playing flashlight tag.
4/12 11:10 p.m. A possible fight at the West Linn Saloon was just two brothers giving each other a hard time.
4/14 2:10 p.m. Suspected marijuana growing in a yard in the 2900 block of Hunter Way turned out to be a Japanese maple tree.
4/14 3:08 p.m. A subject at the police department wants the police to call Arnold Schwarzenegger to get him on a football team.
4/16 9:11 a.m. Someone was reportedly ringing a doorbell in the 19900 block of Roan Circle for five minutes. It was an upset-looking neighbor.
4/18 12:17 p.m. A 4-year-old was seen riding a bicycle without a helmet and no supervision in the 19700 block of Bellevue Way. When officers spoke with the boys mother, she replied, Oh, yeah, he gets out.
4/19 4:20 p.m. A man driving through the 22000 block of Salamo Road was yelling things at people with a microphone.
4/20 9:40 a.m. A group of unruly parents were raising a ruckus at West Linn High School.
4/21 7:49 p.m. A subject with questionable judgment was seen lying on top of the arch bridge drinking.
4/21 7:54 p.m. A girl was followed by a vehicle near 13th Street and Fifth Avenue. Police found subjects in the vehicle were just whooping and no crime occurred.
4/22 10:17 a.m. A woman in the 2700 block of Beacon Hill Drive was irate that someone peed on her front door.
4/24 8:08 p.m. Someone learning how to drive in the Safeway parking lot keeps hitting shopping carts.
4/26 12:18 a.m. A caller in the 1200 block of 11th Street asked for police help to get an aggressive kitty into a crate to take to the vet.
5/1 5:54 p.m. Teen drivers in the 21400 block of Rosepark Court laid rubber and screeched tires.
4/29 8:18 a.m. A mama duck and her ducklings were attempting to cross Highway 43 near Fairview Way.
5/4 8:03 p.m. Three teen girls at a park in the 1900 block of Hall Street were trying to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew.
5/9 3:39 p.m. An officer and a good Samaritan assisted in removing an uncooperative stray cat from under a bed in a home in the 3700 block of Wild Rose Loop.
5/11 11:37 a.m. A coyote seen at Tanner Park looks thin and hungry.
5/15 2:15 p.m. Ducks and ducklings were attempting to cross southbound I-205 at Highway 43. An officer succeeded in herding the flock out of the median.
5/21 3:48 p.m. Subjects in the 6500 block of Failing Street were shining laser lights into the eyes of geese in a yard.
5/25 8:20 p.m. Littering teens near Sixth Street and Willamette Falls Drive flipped off a woman who asked them to pick up their trash.
5/26 11:27 a.m. A lax dad was letting his kids play in the street near Burns and River streets.
5/31 7:57 p.m. An unwanted 22-year-old friend of a son in the 6300 block of Shetland Place climbed a tree.
6/3 9:31 p.m. A man brought a woman he met on a chat line to his home in the 2000 block of Sunray Circle. When she started talking about weapons, he grew concerned.
6/4 11:45 a.m. A 19-year-old keeps attacking his 17-year-old brother.
6/5 7:16 a.m. A man slumped in his vehicle in the 5600 block of Hood Street was just parked and using the Starbucks Wi-Fi.
6/6 12:35 p.m. A dead beaver was spotted near Edgewater Court near the water. Police opted to let nature take its course.
6/7 4:26 p.m. The beaver is still near the water on Edgewater Court. Nature is still taking its course.
6/8 1:33 p.m. A butterfingers dropped a cellphone in a storm drain in the 4100 block of Rosepark Drive.
6/8 9:19 p.m. Teens were playing hide-and-seek in the 22600 block of Crown Court. They were hiding so well police couldnt find them.
6/10 10:50 a.m. A protective mother in the 2700 block of Cambridge Street wants to know how to keep an ex-girlfriend away from her son.
6/15 4:46 p.m. An 11-year-old son was being belligerent and was yelling.
6/19 3:23 p.m. Entrepreneurial kids were in the middle of the street in the 2600 block of Lancaster Street holding signs. They were trying to sell Kool-Aid.
6/19 6:54 p.m. A suspected drunken clerk in the 19300 block of Willamette Drive was just upset over an unrelated issue.
6/28 3:38 p.m. A 17-year-old son with a grudge took his moms cellphone and refused to give it back because he was grounded.
6/28 7:36 p.m. A parent in the 2400 block of Marylhurst Drive teaching a child how to dial 911 actually called the police.
6/30 9:31 a.m. Suspected thieves at Willamette Park were really water ski team members.
7/11 8:28 a.m. A spiteful cat bit a woman in the 3600 block of Wild Rose Loop.
7/13 10:19 p.m. Two men were fighting instead of crying over spilt beer at the West Linn Saloon.
7/14 6:40 p.m. A dad called the police when his upset son refused to go to his room.
7/14 9:28 p.m. Police gave a mother some parenting advice after her 7-year-old slapped her while in a vehicle at McDonalds on Eighth Court.
7/15 7:11 p.m. Subjects throwing around a ball on a chain in the 18500 block of Upper Midhill Drive were just doing sports.
7/16 11:49 p.m. A suspicious flashlight in a yard in the 2500 block of Palomino Court was someone waiting for a friend.
7/19 9:39 p.m. A couple at North Willamette Park was showing too much affection.
7/24 10:58 p.m. A subject wearing an Angry Bird suit came to a door in the 1100 block of Blankenship Road and declared, I am the original angry bird.
7/24 12:33 p.m. Blackberry picking and eating juveniles thought to be trespassing were deemed to be on city property and A-OK.
7/24 8:37 p.m. A man in the 1000 block of S. Station Lane upset with noise coming from the Street of Dreams threatened to drive his 4x4 through whatever machine is making the noise.
7/31 1:05 p.m. A caller near Coeur dAlene and Crystal Terrace drives wants the speed monitoring sign taken down as kids are riding their bikes to see how fast they can clock themselves.
7/27 8:32 p.m. Kids were thought to be torturing a snake near the boat ramp in the 1100 block of 12th Street. However, they were feeding their pet snake a rat. They were told to bring the snake back home.
7/30 9:29 p.m. A resident in the 22800 block of Oregon City Loop called police because her dog was going crazy. Officers found nothing to get wild about, though.
8/4 12:54 p.m. Kids on a dock in the 18400 block of Nixon Avenue were throwing mud.
8/10 12:31 a.m. A man in his pajamas sitting on the corner of Renaissance Court and Summit Street was suspicious.
8/16 9:20 p.m. A party with minors drinking in the 2100 block of Nolan Lane proved to be just young-at-heart adults.
8/20 2:51 p.m. A 9-year-old threw a water balloon at another boy in the 4400 block of Simpson Street in retaliation.
8/21 3:44 p.m. An old dog wanting to learn new tricks was found in the main office at West Linn High School.
8/23 8:05 p.m. A man passed, out at the Chevron station in the 2100 block of Eighth Court, suddenly awoke and drove off.
8/24 6:16 a.m. A party guest from the previous night suddenly appeared in a kitchen in the 18400 block of Nixon Avenue.
8/26 8:16 a.m. A man eating a bowl of cereal while driving ran a stop sign in the 22900 block of Willamette Drive.
8/27 8:28 p.m. Two suspicious men with a basketball were seen entering Midhill Park. Officers found them playing basketball.
8/31 6:32 p.m. A man wearing just underwear was doing a Tarzan impression by swinging from the trees.
9/2 6:53 p.m. A male called police unhappy that his brother was punching him.
8/31 2:05 p.m. A lost dog appeared not excited to see its owner when reunited in the 19900 block of Willamette Drive.
9/8 11:45 p.m. A suspected alarm in a neighborhood turned out to be crickets.
9/10 11:30 a.m. A tattered man with missing teeth walking two dogs in the 900 block of Marylhurst Circle seemed out of place.
9/14 4:34 p.m. An unkind neighbor in the 5300 block of River Street left an unattended lawnmower running for hours in an attempt to ruin a wedding.
9/16 1:01 a.m. A man wearing camouflage and face paint was not blending in well in the 4000 block of Willamette Falls Drive.
9/18 9:41 a.m. A bus driver witnessed a middle school-age child climbing out of a storm grate near Exeter Street and Sunset Avenue.
9/22 2:06 a.m. A suspected drunken driver loitering in the McDonalds drive-thru was just slow, not drunk.
9/26 5:53 p.m. A woman in the 20700 block of Willamette didnt appreciate being the victim of a prank call.
10/2 1:53 p.m. A library patron who was declined a card burned the application outside the library.
10/3 8:39 p.m. Two women sitting on a curb drinking and smoking in the 1200 block of Orchard Street said they needed a break from the kids.
10/5 9:06 p.m. A suspicious woman rang a doorbell, jumped up and down and barked like a dog in the 4600 block of Calaroga Drive.
10/10 12:55 p.m. A man wearing a suit and asking for jumper cables at Albertsons was found suspicious.
10/11 9:23 a.m. A true tree hugger was clinging to a neighbors tree in the 2800 block of Polo Court trying to prevent it from being cut down.
10/14 11:19 a.m. When a customer walked into the U.S. Bank it was found empty. The bank was closed for Columbus Day, but someone forgot to lock the doors.
10/22 1:58 p.m. A naked lady doing poses was spotted in Mary S. Young State Park.
10/24 3:20 a.m. A caller wanted a ride home from 7-Eleven in Willamette Drive. A cab was called for him.
10/28 12:43 a.m. A girl was heard screaming and crying that she doesnt want to go to school.
10/30 12:39 a.m. A man in the 19100 block of Willamette Drive seeking a ride was informed the police department is not a taxi service.
10/31 12:54 a.m. A sleepwalking 13-year-old boy knocked on a neighbors door in the 1600 block of Dollar Street. He was returned home.
10/30 12:07 p.m. Numerous dogs are relieving themselves in numerous yards in the 1900 block of Hall Street.
11/6 10:52 a.m. A frightened caller saw an unfamiliar vehicle in the driveway and heard footsteps downstairs. The suspected prowler was the exterminator.
11/7 5:26 a.m. A jogger with his hands in a sweatshirt scared a child in the 22000 block of Salamo Road.
11/8 12:18 p.m. A neighbor was accused of dumping tree debris into a fish pond in the 3400 block of Riverknoll Way. Police found the culprit to be Mother Nature.
11/11 3:11 p.m. A teen home alone in the 2400 block of Debok Road heard someone in the house. It was his step-mother, who popped in and left again.
11/13 1:32 a.m. A woman in the 1300 block of Skye Parkway called police after someone knocked on her door. The knocker was an officer letting her know her door was open.
11/12 9 a.m. A neighbors cat in the 2100 block of College Hill Place pees on the front door and attacks the owners cat through the screen door.
11/17 3 p.m. An erratically driven vehicle near Skyline Drive and Woodwinds Court appeared to be driven by a 10-year-old.
11/22 10:23 p.m. When police were asked to check on loud teenage car clouters at Tanner Creek Park, they instead discovered middle school kids playing hide-and-seek.
11/29 5:40 p.m. A suspicious man with a gas can asking for gas in the 4600 block of Elmran Drive really was out of gas.
11/30 6:30 p.m. A grinch in the 1100 block of Blankenship Road found outdoor speakers blasting Christmas music disruptive.
12/6 1:59 p.m. A woman grew concerned when a friend started making funny noises while on the phone.
12/11 11:29 p.m. A caller was frightened by a round, bright, white light shining through the trees. It was the moon.
12/11 7:29 p.m. A large cat or bear was spotted near Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue.
12/15 8:22 a.m. Yelling heard in the Sharis parking lot was a 6-year-old child having a moment. Dad was correcting the behavior.Add a comment
