City employees deserve gold medals

It seems like all of a sudden a flurry of “sale pending” stickers blanket the once- desperate “for sale” signs on lawns in my neighborhood.

As I’ve driven around West Linn, it seems to be the case in many neighborhoods. Yes, I believe the real estate market is picking up in general. At the same time, I think as a city, we are doing a much better job at marketing West Linn as a wonderful place to live, raise a family and retire.

What is the value to each of us as homeowners when West Linn lands in the top 100 places to live in the U.S. as ranked by CNN/Money Magazine? More importantly, West Linn was the top-ranked Oregon city.

Our primary schools and high school are top-ranked in the state as well when compared on ranking websites. West Linn has a wonderful adult community center that supports senior residents. West Linn has one of the lowest crime rates in the greater Portland metro area.

I fundamentally believe these are all things that residents research when looking for a place to live. So — when that next person is looking to buy a home — is West Linn in the running as a top contender? Heck yes we are!

Like many, my home is my largest investment. And, like many, the last several years have made me cringe at the negative return on investment. The “sale pending” and “sold” stickers this summer have made me smile.

This summer’s Olympics remind us all — reaching a goal is a journey, with lots of planning and hard work, from people who are passionate and care.

I would like to hand out gold medals to all of the city employees, school district employees, resident volunteers and anyone else that takes the time to make West Linn a better place to live.

When new residents want to live here instead of the next town over the value of my largest investment goes up. Job well done — keep it up!
