Now that the school year has wound down, I turn my attention to my favorite time in West Linn: the summer!by: SUBMITTED - Jenni Tan

I love raising my family in a community with so many exciting, enriching summer activities. I wanted to take a minute to share with you the calendar of events taking place in West Linn so you can enjoy these special moments in our community.

Have you checked out the West Linn Parks and Recreation catalog lately? You’ll be amazed at the variety of summer activities that are available this year. From the Family Trail Running Series to Safety Town to Fun in the Sun day camps — our parks and recreation department is offering something for everyone this summer.

I also encourage you to participate in the library’s summer reading program. Kids, teens and adults can participate in reading adventures. In addition, the library is offering drop-in craft projects from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday and Friday. Penguin door hangers, paper matryoshka dolls, animal masks and other crafts will be available to make.

The West Linn Street Dance in the Willamette area is scheduled for July 13 at 6:30 p.m. This is your chance to see which of your West Linn neighbors (and city councilors) are talented dancers. This year, John English, Mag Hughes and Pressure Point will provide entertainment at this fun event.

The Old Time Fair is a highlight of the summer. Scheduled for July 19-21, this event in Willamette Park and the surrounding area is our true community festival. I am excited to participate in the parade down Willamette Falls Drive on Saturday, July 20; and in a trivia game show on the main stage on Sunday, July 21.

The other highlight of the summer is West Linn’s 100th birthday. We’ll celebrate this momentous occasion the weekend of Aug. 15 with several events, including a birthday party at Music in the Park on Aug. 15; a 100 Years of Music concert on Aug. 16; and a Centennial Birthday Party on Aug. 18.

For the first time ever, families will have the chance to camp overnight in Mary S. Young State Park as part of the Great West Linn Outdoor Adventure on Aug. 17.  Sign up today for a campsite and get ready to enjoy an evening of night hikes, campfires, a movie on the big screen and outdoor educational activities.

You can enjoy the Music in the Park concerts all summer long on Thursday nights at Tanner Creek Park, beginning on July 25 at 6 p.m. And, Movies in the Park rotate to different neighborhood parks every Friday night at dusk.

Please take a moment to check the city’s website at or its Facebook pages and Twitter feeds to stay on top of these great summer events that make West Linn the best community for families in Oregon. I look forward to seeing you soon!
