Basketball coach gives thanks to senior girls

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Coach is happy and sad to work just one year with the senior girls on the Lions basketball team.

An open letter to my seniors:

I have much to be thankful for this season but the biggest blessing I have to tell you about is the seniors that I “inherited” when I took the job at West Linn. You see, when I applied for the job as head coach at West Linn, I had no idea of any of the skills, personalities or even record from the prior season.

I had been living in California for the last four years and although I was keeping track of high school basketball by following Oregonlive.com and the Westlinntidings.com, I had no idea what was going on with the West Linn girls basketball program.

I got the job at the end of May and started in June and hit the ground running from there.

I had a chance to meet the whole team in the beginning of June and then held two weeks of practices before our first spring tournaments. Right away, I was taken aback in such a great way with the seniors that were on the team. When I got a chance to get to know the seniors in that short period of time, I immediately felt so blessed.

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success”

Hannah Matthiessen, Morgan Haskin, Genna Hughes, Ashely Johnson — as a coach, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to lead our team this year. Once I got a chance to know these remarkable ladies I immediately pinched myself. Great attitudes, total buy-in, enthusiastic, funny, smart, beautiful and an absolute joy to be around. I am so proud and happy to have had a chance to know these girls.

The way they responded to having so much change in their last year has been beyond commendable.

I am happy and sad at the same time to have had the opportunity to work with these young ladies. Happy because I’m lucky that my seniors were so awesome and sad because I wish I had a couple more years with them. But happy again because I know that these girls will be so successful in life with the energy, spirit, smarts, confidence and personality that they carry within.

I am blessed to have had a chance to coach them for one season. The legacy they created this season ... it is a testament to their heart and determination.

I will be forever grateful that I got a chance to work with these young ladies, if only for one season. My seniors are truly exceptional and I will always look back on this time with a huge smile, warm heart, and I will cherish them always.
