As you may know, West Linn has begun a planning process to envision the future of the Arch Bridge-Bolton area, the “Heart of West Linn.” As a member of the city council, I want to invite you to participate in a three-day event at a Storefront Studio in Central Village on April 14th through 16th.

The studio will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday for you, your friends and family to drop by. There will also be two evening workshops at the studio — Monday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 16 — for you to attend and share your ideas. These workshops begin at 6 p.m. each night and are open to everyone.

One of our city council goals for 2014 is to engage the community in our plans to reinvigorate the Arch Bridge-Bolton area. Metro has designated this area as a town center and we received a Community Planning and Development grant from Metro to complete a master plan for this area that is the heart of West Linn.

For this project, the primary area of focus starts at the Willamette River (near the Arch Bridge and police station) and follows along Highway 43 just beyond Hammerle Park, near Bolton Primary School. Our overall goal is to develop a cohesive plan that can be implemented over time by a combination of public and private actions.

We have five objectives for the project. We want to:

1. Build on the rich natural and cultural history of West Linn and its relationship to the environment, particularly the Willamette River.

2. Create a town center that serves as a focus of community activity, commerce, recreation and housing opportunities.

3. Ensure that the evolving town center respects the scale and character of the community while introducing any increased density and height and new building forms.

4. Establish the alignment of the trail from Willamette Park.

5. Improve the street network and waterway connections to provide for better and safer pedestrian access, bicycle and transit use, and to establish a strong, clear identity for the town center.

By meeting these objectives, we hope to establish a strong, clear identity for the Arch Bridge/Bolton area.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of this area for decades to come. How can we make this area into an amazing community center? What would you like to see in this area? What opportunities are there for job and business growth? Are there opportunities for additional housing?

Now it’s your turn to share your ideas on how we can meet these objectives. The Storefront Studio will be located at 22000 Willamette Drive, Suite 106 in Central Village (between FedEx and Elements).

I look forward to hearing your ideas on how we can plan the Heart of West Linn.
