Former WL standout puts together her own volleyball clinic

Ashley Robinson, a former state champion setter for West Linn, has enlisted help from some All-Americans in setting up a local camp.

by: MATTHEW SHERMAN - Ashley Robinson was a four-year player at Oregon State University as a setter and a libero and some of her former teammates will be in town to help her run her newly formed volleyball clinic.

Ashley Robinson (formerly Evans) left West Linn as one of the best setters in the program's rich history. She helped lead the Lions to a state championship her junior year and went on to have a very successful college career at Oregon State University, going up against some of the best competition in the country night in and night out.

Robinson, who is now a teacher, recently moved back to West Linn and has been putting her volleyball skills to good use.

Last year, Robinson started a volleyball clinic, held at Wilsonville High School, that was designed to be an affordable chance for young girls to receive high-quality instruction.

“I'm really excited about it. I wish something like this had been around when I was in high school or middle school. A lot of the camps that are available are so expensive,” Robinson said.

The clinic was a big success and this year, Robinson decided to up the ante.

“Last year we didn't publicize it much and we pretty much just had kids from the Wilsonville area. This year we thought 'why not open it up to everyone?'” Robinson said.

It was important for Robinson to have a talented group of former players and her connections with former Division-I players helped her bring in an impressive crew.

Former teammates at Oregon State Camilla Ah-hoy, from Hawaii and Jill Swapzky, from Manitoba, Canada, are both All-Americans and are flying in for the clinic along with BYU libero Lindsey Nehring.

Five courts will be open for the clinic which will again be held at Wilsonville High School and Robinson will man one while acting as the clinic's director as well.

The clinic will emphasize setting and defense, two aspects of the game where Robinson is particularly adept.

Robinson was a setter all throughout club ball and during high school and spent her first two years setting with the Beavers.

Prior to her junior season, Oregon State brought in Ah-hoy to be the team's primary setter and Robinson was faced with a choice.

“I just wanted to play so I asked my coaches what I could do and they said that there was an opening for a libero,” Robinson said. She spent the offseason training to learn the entirely new position and won the starting spot her junior and senior year.

“I loved it. I think I had an advantage coming over from being a setter because I could read the hitters and the defense and that came with a lot of practice,” Robinson said.

Robinson is hoping for a large turnout for her clinic this year which runs July 23-26 at Wilsonville. The clinic runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday.

The cost is $125 to attend which includes a t-shirt and there will be giveaways and prizes as well.
