Adzasu ready to start pro career

The former West Linn point guard recently finished a strong collegiate career and is eager to start playing pro ball overseas

by: VERN UYETAKE - Former West Linn point guard Rosetta Adzasu recently completed her college career which featured a two-year stint at Washington St. and now looks to play professionally overseas.Former West Linn point guard Rosetta Adzasu is closing in on a goal that she set for herself years ago. Practically from the time she took up the sport, Adzasu has dreamed of playing professionally and she is on the verge of making that happen overseas.

“That's always been a dream of mine. I've just been training really hard and it looks like I'll probably end up signing in Italy,” Adzasu said.

It's been a steep climb for the former Lion. She graduated last spring from Washington State University after playing for the Cougars for two years.

In her time there, Adzasu got to take on some of the best competition in the country, going up against traditional powerhouses in the very strong Pac-12 conference.

Adzasu put up good numbers for Washington State. As a junior, she started 14 games and led the team with 103 assists and 61 steals, numbers that were good enough to place her in the top-10 in the conference in both statistics.

While with the Cougars, Adzasu split time as the team's starting point guard and was a valuable utility player.

“I kind of did anything we needed. I could rebound or play defense. It was different because I never had a specific role. Growing up I was always someone who would put the ball in the basket but (with Washington State) I did a little bit of everything,” Adzasu said.

As has been the case her entire career, Adzasu's calling card was her terrific speed which made her difficult to defend and a constant threat on defense.

But, at the Division I level, Adzasu quickly picked up on areas of her game where she needed to improve.

“I'll always be fast but I saw that my basketball IQ needed to be at a different level. What separates the best players in the Pac-12 was just who was willing to go the extra mile and work harder. I needed to be able to see the court better,” Adzasu said.

Adzasu led the Cougars in assists again her senior year and averaged more than seven points per game, finishing as the team's second best three-point shooter as well.

Since graduating, Adzasu has continued to train hard to stay in shape as she prepares for the next faze of her career.

“Right now I'm staying busy with work and training. I'm really focusing on improving my mid-range jump-shot because if I can knock that down I'm really hard to guard,” Adzasu said.

Adzasu had the opportunity to attend the WNBA combine in the spring and played alongside some of the top women's basketball players in the world.

“That will always be the dream,” Adzasu said of one day getting drafted into the WNBA.

For now, she will concentrate on her upcoming professional career in Europe where she will look to put up numbers and make a name for herself.

“At this level you just have to go into it wit ha good attitude and play to your potential. Hopefully in a couple of years I'll be in the mix (for the WNBA),” Adzasu said.

The former Lion could also have opportunities to play all around the world with the national team from Ghana.

The team reached out to Adzasu for this year's Olympics but NCAA restrictions made it difficult for Adzasu to play with the team. But, since graduating, she will likely play for Ghana in upcoming international competitions.
