WL wrestlers go 3-0 in opening dual meet tournament

The Lions knock off West Albany, Corvallis and Sunset with six wrestlers going unbeaten

The West Linn wrestling team got off to a terrific start last week, sweeping thee dual meets against West Albany, Corvallis and Sunset, perhaps bolstering some already high expectations for the squad.

“The coaching staff was pleased with the efforts made by all in our season opener,” coach Doug Samarron said.

The Lions started with a 59-12 victory over a West Albany team that only featured four varsity wrestlers.

Against Corvallis, it was the Lions who were a bit short-handed, giving up forfeits at 106 and 113 points to immediately trail 12-0.

However, the Lions got things started with a terrific match from Ethan Staley who tallied a pin in just 49 seconds.

West Linn was able to ride that momentum for the remainder of the meet and would win nine out of 12 contested matches.

Then, against a deep and talented Sunset team, the Lions came away with an impressive 41-35 victory.

Staley got West Linn started again with another early pin, this time in just 39 seconds and the Lions went on to claim seven of 11 contested matches.

Six West Linn varsity wrestlers went undefeated for the tournament. Staley was extremely impressive at 120 pounds. Kane Snapp was also unbeaten at 132 pounds.

Trent Porter was another standout for the Lions, turning in a terrific performance to go unbeaten at 145 pounds.

“Whether he was leading or behind in his matches, Trent never quit wrestling,” Samarron said.

Tim Harman and Adam Roethe also went 3-0 at 152 pounds and 170 pounds respectively, as did Ellis Eaton at 215 pounds.

West Linn's varisty 2 team also had a terrific showing. Eleven wrestlers each had three matches and the team showed its depth by going 30-3 combined.

“It was an awesome showing at the varsity 2 level. That's what we like to see,” Samarron said.

The Lions showed a lot of early toughness and appear to be in terrific shape early in the season despite being displaced from their home wrestling room.

“Our team focus this year is to make people quit, to outwork our opponents,” Samarron said.
