West Linn explodes for first win of season

by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: DAVID BALL - West Linn's Carly Savoy takes a swing during Wednesday's 12-2 win at Centennial.

GRESHAM — The West Linn softball team broke the game open with a fourth-inning hitting spree to down Centennial 12-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

After a groundout to open the inning, the Lions put the next seven hitters on base. Briana Barzola highlighted the spurt with an RBI-double, while Maddy Higgins beat out an infield hit in the next at-bat to bring in another run. Five straight West Linn batters found their way home, as a tight 3-1 game turned into an 8-1 blowout.

The Lions connected on four singles during the spurt, drew a walk and had another play reach on an error.

Centennial took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Karley Buckland landed a double just inside the right-field line. She came in to score on the next pitch after Madison Hamilton punched a hopper through the left side of the infield.

The Eagles had a chance to add to their early margin when Natalie McDonald sent a bouncer into the right-field grass, but Higgins put a throw on-target to the plate giving catcher Mackenzie Hartdegen plenty of time to tag out the Centennial runner and end the inning.

The Lions moved ahead to stay in the third inning after Barzola stole third base to put pressure on the Centennial defense working with two outs. An attempted pick-off after the next pitch clipped the edge of the infielder’s glove and rolled into the grass, opening the door for Barzola to sprint home.

West Linn’s Hannah Sicilliani slammed an RBI-double that bounced to the center-field fence to extend the gap to 3-1.
