Offense comes to life in a 7-5 win to keep the Lions in third place in the TRL

by: MATTHEW SHERMAN - West Linn shortstop Leah Beyer charges a ground ball during the Lions' 7-4 victory over Lakeridge at home on Monday. After a tough loss at the hands of first-place Clackamas on Friday, the West Linn softball team got back in the win column on Monday with a 7-4 win over Lakeridge.

The victory kept the Lions two games up on Canby for third place in the Three Rivers League with just five games left in the regular season.

West Linn got off to a slow start in the game. Lakeridge struck first with a two-run home run in the top of the second to put West Linn in an early hole.

But the Lions slowly chipped away. Hallie Olmstead scored from second on an errant throw in the bottom of the second and Mackenzie Hartdegen belted an RBI double in the bottom of the third to tie the game.

Then the Lions broke things open in the bottom of the fourth.

West Linn put pressure on Lakeridge's defense and the Pacers failed to come up with some big plays which allowed for three runs to score.

Pitcher Sara VonAhn hit a two-out double to left field and Briana Barzola followed with an RBI single. Barzola would later score after Maddi Higgins reached on an error.

Caroline Freiling followed with an RBI double that got under the centerfielder's glove and rolled to the fence.

The Lions would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Leah Beyer belted a pitch to the fence for an RBI double and VonAhn followed with another double, hitting from the No. 9 spot.

Trailing 7-2, Lakeridge made a game of it. The Pacers scored a run in the top of the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs before VonAhn responded with a clutch strikeout.

The Pacers would score once more in the seventh inning before the Lions slammed the door.

West Linn is 6-4 in league and just one game behind Oregon City. Those teams played their rubber match on Wednesday but results were not available at press time.

West Linn will travel to Canby on Friday for another important contest.
