The Lions tune up for the playoffs with a lopsided win over Oregon City

The West Linn girls lacrosse team had some business to attend to last week before gearing up for what they hope is a long playoff run that ends with a championship trophy.

The Lions had yet to clinch sole possession of the league title heading into the final game of the season and needed a victory over their rivals from Oregon City, who could force a three-way tie for first place with a victory.

“We certainly didn't want to finish with a loss. Oregon City's a very talented team,” coach Meg Elston said.

West Linn didn't want to end the regular season on a negative note and put together another terrific performance against the Pioneers in a 17-8 victory.

The Lions gave up the first goal of the game in a back-and-forth few opening minutes but West Linn quickly settled in and started to build an advantage.

West Linn controlled possession and peppered the Oregon City goal for much of the night, racking up nearly 40 shots, compared to just 14 by the Pioneers.

Annie Longtain had one of her better games of the season, scoring five times and adding an assist to the effort.

Hanna Morford also had a hat-trick, along with Natalie Byrne, who proved to be a tough stop for the Pioneers as, on multiple occasions, she won the draw and went the length of the field for a quick goal.

Byrne and Morford combined to capture 11 draws in the game while Megan Longtain led all players with five ground balls.

It was a dominant showing by the Lions who continue to look the part of the top-ranked team in the state heading into the playoffs.

West Linn's postseason begins on Wednesday at home against Hood River.

For the first time since Elston has been head coach, the Lions enter the playoffs as the Three Rivers League champions and as perhaps the team to beat.

“It's an opportunity for us to prove to ourselves that we deserve it,” Elston said.
