Track team wraps up regular season

West Linn looks to get individuals through to state at this weeks district meet

by: VERN UYETAKE - West Linn's Connor Cushman captured the 3000 meters at last week's final dual meet against Lakeridge, Grant and Clackamas and will look to make it to state at districts this week. The West Linn track team wrapped up the regular season in a four-team meet with Lakeridge, Grant and Clackamas last week and saw some of the league's top competition in the process.

The Lions will get a rematch against many of the same individuals they saw last week this Thursday and Friday at the district meet with state berths on the line.

West Linn more than held its own in the competitive meet. For the girls, Cara Boucher continues to her strong senior campaign. She finished fourth in the 200 and was second in the 400 with a career-best time of 58.05.

Rebecca Donnelly had a strong showing in the 1500, taking fourth in 5:17.42 while Marija Jozic was fourth in the 3000.

West Linn took second in both relays as well, losing only to Lakeridge in a pair of very competitive races.

In the shot put, Julia Boyd-Helm came in third. Meredith Bowers took fourth in the discus and Audrety Belisle was fifth in the javelin.

The freshmen pair of Emily Hamel and Audrey Clow finished in third and fourth in the pole vault as well.

For the boys, Mason Craig had a strong showing in the 100, taking fourth place and Kurt Moon did the same in the 200, nearly breaking 24 seconds in the process.

West Linn's best showing came in the 3000 where Connor Cushman won, followed closely by teammate Grayson Ollar. The Lions' Michael Sullivan also took fourth in the event.

West Linn's 4x100 relay of Craig, Moon, Tristan Stallcup and Lucas Evans also took second place, edging out Clackamas at the line.

In the field, Gavin Anderson was third in the discus and fifth in the shot put while Drew Cribbs took third in the javelin.

Scott Nicholson finished fourth in the high jump while Bradley Neslon and Kyle Harris were fourth and fifth respectively in the pole vault.

Freshman Troy Carver finished fourth in the long jump and Mario Mastrandrea was fifth in the triple jump.

West Linn now gears up for the biggest meet of the season as it competes at districts today (Thursday) and Friday at the old Oregon City High School.
