West Linns OIBA team downs Tigard 9-8 in extra innings

West Linn got off to a fast start.

The Lions also had a strong finish.

And that was just enough to get them a win over Tigard.

West Linn, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead, held off a pair of Longhorn rallies and then scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth-inning to get a 9-8 victory during play Friday at the 2013 Grenade Gloves Classic.

The tournament, which included eight Oregon Independent Baseball Association teams, was held Thursday through Sunday at Lake Oswego High School.

In Friday’s thriller against Tigard, the Lions jumped on top early, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning.

Daniel Ferrario got the big inning started with a leadoff single to center field. Rudy Hughes then reached base on a Tigard error and Parker Huffman followed with a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Ferrario then scored the game’s first run on a groundout by Haven Fritts.

Hughes would score on a fielder’s choice grounder by Jackson Brooke and Huffman stole home on the front end of double steal to make the score 3-0. Brayden Pene and Braden Vogt added RBI singles later in the frame to cap off the five-running inning.

The Lions added on another run in the top of the third inning, when Brooke doubled in Huffman, to make the score 6-0.

But Tigard came fighting back. The Longhorns scored four runs in the bottom of the third to trim the margin to 6-4. Tigard then scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 6-6.

Now, it was West Linn’s turn to battle back. The Lions regained the lead, at 7-6, in the top of the sixth inning when Chase Meyers singled in Brooke, who singled to lead off the frame. West Linn added on another run in the top of the seventh inning to up the margin to 8-6.

But Tigard rallied again. The Longhorns got a two-run double by Jarod Gogal in the bottom of the seventh to tied the game at 8-8 and send the contest to extra innings.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning. But, in the top of the ninth, Hughes hit a one-out triple for West Linn, and he scored on a bloop single off the bat of Garrett Meissen to give the Lions a 9-8 lead.

Trevor Wells, pitching in relief for West Linn, put Tigard down in order in the bottom of the inning to wrap up the Lions’ one-run victory.

West Linn, as a team, had 14 base hits in the victory. Huffman went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Brooke went 3 for 5 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Meyers and Will Matthiessen each had a pair of hits.

Matthiessen, Huffman and Wells all pitched for the Lions in the victory.

For Tigard, Gogal went 2 for 4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
