The first Series 33 triathlon ever held in West Linn was a success on Sunday.

What's more, the event has a future.

"It was really good. It was very successful," said Mark Buser, who helped bring the triathlon to West Linn. He also competed himself, finishing 11th overall and second in his age group.

Forty triathletes showed up to experience the scenic joys of West Linn, especially the bicycle portion of the race.

"The athletes were really impressed, especially by Pete's Mountain," Buser said. "This event had unparalleled beauty and it was a tough course."

The West Linn triathlon attracted competitors from five states, including one who came all the way from Minnesota. It also attracted over 30 volunteers, and triathlon director Ken McLarty, founder of the Series 33 triathlon circuit, was praised by Buser for doing an outstanding job.

In such a lengthy, challenging event, Buser was happy to note, "Nobody got hurt or lost."

Word of mouth should be great for the event.

"The triathlete community is very tight," Buser said. "They talk a lot about the events they compete in. They are going to go back and tell others about West Linn. Based on what happened this year, I expect 100 to 150 competitors to be at next year's event."

Next year? Right. Buser believes that this year is only the beginning of a triathlon tradition in West Linn

"I think this will be an annual event," he said. "I think it will be the kind of triathlon that can attract athletes from all around, not just be a local event. The idea is to make this a real community event.

"Of course, we will try to make it better. We want to continue to work with the city. It would be really nice to get police participation in 2014."

Buser and McLarty are hoping that the West Linn triathlon will contribute to a break-through for Oregon triathletes. Until the Series 33 began this summer, area triathlons had only been held at Blue Lake and Haag Lake. Four other new triathlons have been scheduled in Mt. Hood, Estacada, Vancouver and Xterra.
