Ski teams kick off season at Cato Memorial Race


Boys capture the title for third straight year

The West Linn boys ski team holds the trophy from last week's Cato Memorial Race. The Lions won the event for the third year in a row. The West Linn girls took third place at the competition.The 24th annual Christine Cato Memorial Race was held Saturday at Timberline under sunny skies and lower than normal snow conditions. This is a non-league race in memory of a high school ski racer who died in a tragic accident 24 years ago at Timberline.

The race this year had 392 competitors and is the largest high school race in the country.

The West Linn ski team put it all on the line and had some terrific performances. The boys varsity team (Colin Maxwell, Kyle Larson, Jordan Riesterer, Chris McNabb, Grant McDonald and Dylan Tuor) won the event for the third year in a row. The girls varsity team (featuring Annalyssa Sassara, Tyler Shipley, Sammy Steeh, Emily Jordan, Quinn Mitchell and Anneke Hlady) placed third.

In the individual category for boys varsity, Riesterer placed sixth, Maxwell 17th and McNabb 22nd, followed by Larson and McDonald.

For the girls varsity, Sassara placed fifth, Shipley 10th and Steeh 37th, followed by Jordan and Hlady.

In the boys JV competition, Zach Stevens finished eighth, Brennan Pool 14th, Cole Butler 16th and Andrew Oetken 27th. For the girls JV team, Carly Savoy placed finished 10th. This was the first ski race for four of the five JV athletes.
