Horak comes to WLHS after successful stint at Lake Oswego

When West Linn's current athletic director, Kevin Mills, elected to move over to fill the school's open administrative position focusing on curriculum and development, the Lions only had to look down the street to find his replacement.

West Linn recently announced the hiring of Mark Horak as its newest AD, coming over after an extremely successful stint at Lake Oswego.

Horak had recently informed Lake Oswego that he would be stepping aside and pursuing his administrative license and, when a job opened up at West Linn, where the position of AD is also an administrator, he jumped at the chance.

“You just kind of know when you're ready for the next move. It's always been a goal of mine to go back and get my administrative license and this job is forcing me to do that,” Horak said.

Horak comes with extremely impressive credentials and is one of the most respected athletic directors in the state.

He oversaw perhaps the most successful run of athletic success in Lake Oswego High School's history and earned national recognition.

Bailey was excited about the prospect of landing someone with a sterling reputation who also comes with knowledge of the school and its coaches and programs.

“He's just a real, genuine guy, full of integrity who always had kids at the forefront and you can just tell that. He blew us away during the interview process,” West Linn Principal Lou Bailey said.

Horak, whose son is set to graduate from Lake Oswego this spring, said he was looking for a change and West Linn seemed like a very positive fit.

“If you look at the success they've had and are currently having, the schools are very comparable. I'm familiar with the coaches and staff members and I know they're great,” Horak said.

Horak inherits and athletic and activities program at West Linn that has started to experience its own renaissance.

“The challenge now is for us to stay at a high level and to make sure everything keeps moving forward. We're really excited,” Bailey said.

Horak will begin taking his administrative classes in a matter of weeks and will officially begin the job at West Linn July 1.
