West Linn girls cross country sweeps past Lake Oswego, Sherwood
The West Linn girls cross country team is hitting its stride.
The Lions proved that again last week, speeding past both Lake Oswego and Sherwood at Lake Oswego Junior High on Sept. 27.
The Lions took six of the day's top seven overall places to knock off the Lakers 20-43 and take out Sherwood 15-49 to lift their TRL record to 4-2. Sherwood beat Lake Oswego 25-30 in the day's other dual meet.
"That was awesome," said senior Raina Hines, who finished second overall with a time of 20 minutes, 34.20 seconds. "We definitely have a good chance as a team going into district. I'm excited about that."
That said, Hines admitted that the course layout at Lake Oswego Junior High — which requires runners to go up and down lengthy sets of steps multiple times — isn't her favorite place to run.
"Personally, it's not my favorite," Hines said. "Lots of hills. It's kind of deceiving. It doesn't seem like it would be that hilly, but once you get in the woods, it's pretty much all uphill. And then hitting those stairs, oh man, coming up those stairs three times, it's horrible."
Hines' time was second only to that of Lake Oswego senior Grace David, who finished the 5-kilometer race with a winning time of 20:16.41.
"I feel really good," David said. "I don't know my time exactly, but I think it was about a minute faster than last year which is awesome because the whole last loop, I kind of relaxed a little bit so that's really good to hear."
Hines did her best to stay with David, but admitted that the Laker senior got away from her.
"She really took off. She definitely had a good race," Hines said. "I wanted to be a little closer to her in the end. She took off after about 2K, something like that, so I was a little disappointed that I wasn't able to stick closer to her, but hopefully, it will be different when we run on a different course."
For West Linn, after Hines, it was sophomore Moya Moses in third at 20:39.32, senior Elizabeth Paschal in fourth at 21:17.99, junior Chantel Florendo in fifth at 21:58.80, and sophomore Alyssa Rowe in sixth at 22:04.52.
After David's first-place finish, teammate Sierra Tinger finished next for the Lakers in 13th place at 24:14.80, followed by Andrea Yang in 15th at 24:37.73, Scarlett Scott-Buck in 16th at 24:46.50, and Julianna Musgrove in 18th at 24:55.41.
Sherwood's varsity finishers included: Kari Eddington, eighth at 22:05.66; Madi Ramos, 10th at 23:11.62; Brooke Smith, 12th at 24:04.33; Emily Pannell, 14th at 24:24.20 and Vanessa VanWinkle, 20th at 25:25.81.
In upcoming meets, the Lions run in the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Washington, on Saturday, then return to TRL competition when they compete with Newberg at Canby on Oct. 11, with the varsity girls meet set for 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys race to follow at 5:30 p.m.
