WWII plane lands in Hillsboro

The “Memphis Belle,” a restored World War II B-17 “flying fortress” bomber, will take to the skies over Hillsboro on Monday, April 29.

The aircraft is a “living museum — our heritage not in mothballs or the pages of a dusty book, but real life, three dimensions, here and now,” said Scott Maher of Liberty Foundation, an Oklahoma-based nonprofit.

The foundation’s 2013 Salute to Veterans Tour will bring the airplane to the area on Monday. On May 4 and 5, it will be on display at the Hillsboro Airport, where it will be open to the public and available for flights and ground tours.

The B-17’s visit represents its first-ever West Coast tour, which was timed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Memphis Belle’s final mission.

The airport is located at 3565 N.E. Cornell Road.
