Local teams shine at Nero tourney
It has already been a great summer for Hillsboros American Legion baseball teams, and it got even better this weekend with several impressive performances at the John Nero Invitational Tournament.
Hillsboro, Glencoe and Liberty each went 2-1 during pool play, advancing to the championship bracket. Hilhi and Glencoe earned No. 2 seeds out of their pools, while Liberty earned the No. 1 seed from its pool.
In bracket play, Hillsboro picked up a 7-4 win over the Portland Barbers behind a strong pitching effort from Chase Kaplan, but the tournament run ended for the Spartans with a 5-0 loss to Bellevue (Wash.).
Liberty lost its opener in bracket play to the Portland Barbers, with brothers Zach and Zane Chitwood squaring off in a pitchers duel. Zach Chitwood, a 2013 Liberty graduate, started for the Barbers, while Zane Chitwood, a rising junior at Liberty, started for the Falcons. Liberty capped the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Glencoe, getting a complete game shutout from rising sophomore Renner Stecki.
The tournament championship was played on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. Bellevue faced the Portland Barbers in an elimination game, and the winner was set to face the Perth Heat, a team from Australia.
