Johnny Limbo launches Rotary Summer Concert Series

Thursdays show marks the first of four summer concerts in Town Center Park

Whether in lawn chairs, on the grass or dancing, they are there to enjoy live music performed by some of the region’s top artists.

Sponsored by the Wilsonville Rotary Club, the Summer Concert Series has featured in the past such luminaries as Curtis Salgado, Lloyd Jones and his Struggle, Michael Allen Harrison, Patrick Lamb, Pink Martini and many other talented acts.

This year, the Wilsonville Rotary Summer Concert Series opens on Thursday, July 18, with a 6:30 p.m. show by longtime Wilsonville favorites Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts. by: JOSH KULLA - Jerry Hofmann, aka Johnny Limbo, is shown at last year with vocalist Barbara Cecil at a show that was cut a bit short by a spectacular display of lightning.

Led by frontman Jerry “Johnny Limbo” Hofmann, the Lugnuts have been entertaining music fans and party-goers alike since 1978. It will be the band’s ninth appearance as part of the Wilsonville Summer Concert Series, where they typically draw more than 1,500 people to dance and enjoy music spanning the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and beyond.

Hofmann is fond of recounting the start of the band as being little more than a one-off party gig. Today, however, the 35-years-and-going-strong band quickly dispels any such notions.

The band’s ever-changing array of on-stage attire is the perfect accompaniment for the music of Lance Parsons on trumpet, trombone and backing vocals, Matt Kenney on bass guitar and backing vocals, Roucke VanDerVeen on lead guitar and backing vocals, Barbara Cecil on vocals, Scott Johnston on saxophone, Jon Lemon on keyboards and backing vocals and Jim Parker on drums and percussion.

Featuring Oregon natives Chad Hamar on rhythm acoustic guitar and Rachel Hamar on vocals, the band formed in 2008 and in their first public performance won a battle-of-the-bands contest to earn an opening slot for country star Kenny Chesney.

That gig was at the Clark County Amphitheater in front of 18,000 country fans. Over the past five years the duo has not slowed down, either. Cloverdayle has been collaborating with a wide range of top country acts, including a project to write and record four separate singles with Brooks and Dunn songwriter Terry McBride.

Rock, pop, country or Motown, this group of experienced, professional musicians will keep you dancing. Featuring Becky Pershing and Michelle Kuepker on vocals, the band has a powerful vocal presence able to get a dance floor really moving.

Hit Machine wraps up the series on Aug. 8 in a return appearance. Last year the band proved one of the most popular of the summer, inspiring hundreds of people of all ages to get on their feet and dance to cover songs of the ’80s, ’90s and beyond.

The concerts are paid for by proceeds from Rotary’s Heart of Gold auction. It also is sponsored by several area businesses. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, bring dinner and a blanket or lawn chairs.

All Wilsonville Summer Concert Series shows are free and open to the public. The concert series also raises money to help eradicate polio through Rotary’s international End Polio Now campaign. Rotary clubs worldwide have been working toward that end since 1985, and this year hope to raise $200 million to match more than $355 million in grant money from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
