Firefighters save home after barn catches fire

No injuries reported in Nov. 22 blaze

by: TVF&R - A Tualatin Valley Fire & Rewcue firefighter works on the Nov. 22 fire that destroyed a Stafford-area barn and threatened an adjacent home. Fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze that ripped through a barn and threatened a nearby home on the outskirts of West Linn near Wilsonville.

No injuries were reported, although five people were at home when crews were alerted to the fire just before 7 p.m. Nov. 22 in the 1400 block of Southwest Schaeffer Road, according to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. The area is in unincorporated Clackamas County between West Linn and Wilsonville.

Crews arrived to find the barn fully engulfed in flames and focused their efforts on fighting the fire from outside of the structure and protecting a home only about 15 feet away.

Strong winds and a lack of nearby water hydrants complicated efforts to control the flames, and crews had to set up a water shuttle operation, bringing water to the scene from other locations, according to TVF&R.

In addition, firefighters had received a report that the barn contained ammunition.

It took 40 firefighters from TVF&R and the Lake Oswego Fire Department to control the two-alarm fire, which eventually caused the barn’s roof to collapse.

The cause remains under investigation.
