Wilsonville's Van Kleef to debut new album

Music industry veterans Michele Van Kleef of Wilsonville and Brian Copeland of Portland will join forces for a dynamic, singer-songwriter night to celebrate the release of Van Kleef’s second full-length studio album, “Your Own Way.” Copeland also will release a new single that night, while fellow Wilsonville-based vocalist Christina Cooper rounds out the night with her Jimmy Mak’s debut.

Van Kleef’s “Your Own Way” was recorded at Portland’s Kung Fu Bakery Studio by producer Tim Ellis, who also plays guitar on the new record. Van Kleef drew on her years of industry connections and assembled an extremely talented cast of musicians for the occasion. This grouping includes Hall & Oates drummer Michael Braun; keyboardist Troy Welstad, who has performed with Pink, A Fine Frenzy and Hilary Duff; and bassist Jamin Swenson, who also plays with John Nilsen’s Swimfish.

Van Kleef’s groove rock has been compared to a range of performers from Janis Joplin to Joni Mitchell.

Van Kleef’s first solo album, “After All,” was also released at Jimmy Mak’s in June 2012. This record, as well as “Your Own Way,” is available on iTunes and other online outlets.

Van Kleef is an acclaimed performer whose earlier bands Calobo and Mackabella gained wide followings. Calobo recorded five albums from 1992-2001 and toured nationally. Mackabella, meanwhile, achieved licensing success with a song in the Johnny Cash film “Walk the Line,” FOX Television’s 90210, Roswell and other shows.

Copeland is currently recording a collection of new songs with Portland’s Rob Stroup at 8 Ball Studios and will be releasing a single at Jimmy Mak’s as a preview. His catchy and lyrical guitar-pop has gained him an enthusiastic fan base in the Northwest.

Finally, Cooper, a country and folk rock singer originally from the Bay Area, now calls Wilsonville home. She recently sang in the 2nd Annual Ladies Rise Up and Rock Show in Portland and is currently working on her debut record.
