Come and get down like it's 1955 at the Soda Shop Rock! at the Wilsonville Community Center. The free, senior citizen only event will be the first of its kind in several years, featuring a DJ spinning hits from the 1950s, sliders and tots, classic root beer floats and prize giveaways.
"This is the first year we have done a rock 'n roll dance for the seniors," says organizer Evie Proctor. "It has been quite a number of years since there have been designated senior events."
Restricted to the 55 and above crowd, senior events used to be a more common facet in the Wilsonville community. But thanks to Proctor, the Soda Shop Rock! will be the first of a renewed tradition of annual senior events with different yearly themes, according to Wilsonville Parks and Recreation Programs Coordinator Brian Stevenson.
"I am hoping to see folks have a fun time dancing to some great music and provide a fun activity," Proctor says.
Although the event is open to the entire community of seniors, since the venue has a 132-person capacity, space is limited and those interested in attending should call the Community Center early to reserve their spots. Proctor hopes that all those in attendance will get into the spirit of the event.
"Poodle skirts and rock 'n' roll attire is encouraged," Proctor says. "You don't need to know how to dance to have fun just enjoying the music and mingling with others!"
