Hilton Garden Inn looking to give Wilsonville a 4-star destination right off I-5

Initial plans, along with a waiver for the maximum building height and the minimum lot, were approved at the Sept. 11 Development Review Board Panel A. The 118-room hotel will be the first high-end hotel in Wilsonville.

When RR Hotels Portland LLC — owned by Wilsonville resident Rohit Sharma — saw that the former Quality Inn motel was for sale, they jumped at the opportunity to redevelop the site.

"It's really a remodel of the existing building to upgrade it and bring a 4-star hotel to the community, which doesn't yet exist," Daniel Kimmel, a representative for RR Hotels said. "The owners have decided to (gut) and rebuild the property to bring it up to modern standards."

Set on a 2.37-acre corner lot at 30800 S.W. Parkway Ave., the proposed hotel will be 58 feet at its highest point and take up a sprawling 78,798 square feet. Surrounding the building will be 103 vehicle parking spaces and 24-bicycle capacity racks.

"The building is designed to be prominent and upscale," Kimmel said.

To help give the hotel a lush vibe, plans include extensive landscaping around the building and dispersed throughout the parking lot.

Initial community responses to the proposed project have been positive, with a host of support being shown over social media.

With Wilsonville ramping up its efforts to create a thriving tourism economy in Wilsonville — having launched its new tourism website, ExploreWilsonville.com, over the summer — the hotel's increased number of rooms will benefit the city as a whole through the increase in hotel/motel tax revenue.

"The number of hotel rooms that it will provide is almost double the current (buildings') number," Mark Ottenad, Wilsonville public/government affairs director said.

Ottenad said the revenues generated from the lodging tax are split between the General Fund, which funds basic community services, including the police, while the other half go into tourism promotion and improving city amenities.

"The community at large wins and gains with the addition of these new hotel rooms," Ottenad said.

But Kimmel said the hotel will be more than a place to sleep.

"The idea is to make it more of a destination," Kimmel said. "That way, instead of people staying outside of the Wilsonville area and community, because there is no 4-star hotel, they're able to stay in the community."
