College sports: Wilsonville Class of 2013 students continue athletic careers

Recent graduates to represent nine states at next level


by: JEFF GOODMAN - Wilsonville High Schools Class of 2013 includes 15 college-bound athletes, who will represent nine states at the next level.Wilsonville High’s Class of 2013 included 16 students who will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. They will represent nine states in many different conferences. Eight of them will compete in Division I, the highest level of college sports.

Here’s a look at who they are and where they’re headed:

Clayton Gelfand | Baseball | Sacramento State

Location: Sacramento

Conference: Western Athletic Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: Clayton Gelfand was an ace pitcher for the Wildcats after transferring from West Linn, posting a 1.75 earned-run average with 97 strikeouts as a junior and holding opposing hitters to a .152 batting average as a senior.

Nick Highberger | Football | Bucknell

Location: Lewisburg, Pa.

Conference: Patriot League

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: A varsity player for four years at Wilsonville, Nick Highberger received all-conference honors three times as a safety and also was recognized for his efforts at quarterback. He made the Class 5A all-state team as a senior safety this past season.

Emily Hooper | Women’s soccer | Sacramento State

Location: Sacramento

Conference: Big Sky Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: A co-captain on the girls soccer team as a senior, forward Emily Hooper was a key member of a squad that reached the Class 5A state finals in 2011 and snapped its losing streak against rival Sherwood in 2012.

Ty James | Men’s track/cross country | Idaho State

Location: Pocatello, Idaho

Conference: Big Sky Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: Ty James leaves the Wildcats as one of the most decorated runners in school history. He won a district title in boys cross county and owns track program bests in the 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter races.

Elyse Laurin | Women’s soccer | Whitman

Location: Walla Walla, Wash.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Wilsonville: Elyse Laurin earned first-team all-state recognition as a defender this past season and was an important member of a back line that shut out seven opponents and held them to a combined 15 goals in 15 games.

Mat Merrick | Football | Linfield College

Location: McMinnville, Ore.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Wilsonville: As a 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker, Mat Merrick had 17 total tackles as a senior this past season. He earned second-team all-league recognition on offense as a guard, helping the Wildcats to a 7-3 overall record.

Colton Muir | Baseball | Shoreline (Wash.) CC

Location: Shoreline, Wash.

Conference: Northern region

Level: NWAACC

At Wilsonville: An outfielder who was also key for the Wildcats on the mound and at the plate, Colton Muir held opposing hitters to a .169 batting average as a junior and smacked 11 doubles as a senior this past season.

Nick Pinto | Men’s soccer | Pacific

Location: Forest Grove, Ore.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Wilsonville: A four-year starter on the boys soccer team, Nick Pinto scored eight goals and logged 10 assists in his senior campaign. The Wildcats went 34-22-10 during his standout prep career.

Gunner Pollman | Baseball | Sacramento State

Location: Sacramento

Conference: Western Athletic Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: A first-team all-conference tight end on the football team, Gunner Pollman made a name for himself as a catcher on the baseball team as well. This past season, he was a consistent producer at the plate and had a walk-off hit.

Johnny Ragin | Football | California

Location: Berkeley, Calif.

Conference: Pac-12 Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: Originally committed to BYU, star linebacker Johnny Ragin will continue his career at Cal after picking up first-team all-league honors on defense and a second-team nod on offense as a senior with the Wildcats this past year.

Tanner Shipley | Football | Boise State

Location: Boise, Idaho

Conference: Mountain West Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: One of the most accomplished athletes in school history, Tanner Shipley graduates as the all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. He also played key roles on the Wildcats basketball and baseball teams.

Michelle Teramura | Women’s soccer | Colorado School of Mines

Location: Golden, Colo.

Conference: Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference

Level: Division II

At Wilsonville: A varsity player for four years, Michelle Teramura helped the Wildcats win league titles in 2010 and 2012. She earned first-team all-conference honors as a senior.

Ben Thomas | Men's track/cross country | Pacific

Location: Forest Grove, Ore.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Wilsonville: A runner-up at the district cross country championships as a senior, Ben Thomas leaves the Wildcats program with a No. 5 ranking in the 5,000-meter race. He was also a four-year member of the track program.

Ryan Walsh | Football | Carroll College

Location: Helena, Mont.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: NAIA

At Wilsonville: A first-team all-league honoree on both sides of the ball this past year, Ryan Walsh averaged 40.27 yards per catch and 13.65 yards per carry. He also led the Wildcats track team to a state title in the boys 400-meter relay.

Jeremey Wetherbee | Men’s lacrosse | Nevada

Location: Reno, Nev.

Conference: West Coast Lacrosse League

Level: Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association

At Wilsonville: Also a talented racecar driver, Jeremey Wetherbee received second-team honors in the Northwest Conference as a midfielder this past season. He was also a three-year letterman in football.

Brett Wolvert | Men’s golf | Evansville

Location: Evansville, Ind.

Conference: Missouri Valley Conference

Level: Division I

At Wilsonville: Brett Wolvert excelled on the links this past season, taking district medalist honors at the Northwest Oregon Conference tournament with a two-day 145. He tied for 28th place overall at the OSAA state tournament in Corvallis.
