Taryn Rawlings, Josh Meyer lead Wildcats in season opener
It would have been easy to predict that Taryn Rawlings would clock the Wilsonville girls cross-country teams fastest time Aug. 29 at Randall Stadium.
She didnt stop there. The standout runner ended up earning the best mark of any Class 5A girl by placing behind two elite 6A athletes with a time of 10 minutes 27 seconds in the senior race.
The annual Night Meet a series of 3,000-meter races that attracts hundreds of athletes from around the state for the unofficial start of their fall season was also an early glimpse at the other runners who will help the Wildcats contend for a state berth this season.
Their second-best time came from Haley Prusse, who crossed the finish line in 12:15 to place fifth in the freshman girls race. Two of the four contestants who finished ahead of her compete in Class 6A.
Wilsonville also had strong efforts by Chloe Tomlinson, Meagan Koeroghlian and Christie Halverson. Tomlinson logged a 12:19 to place 32nd out of more than 120 runners in the junior girls race, while Koeroghlian (12:30) and Halverson (12:35) finished five spots apart in the senior girls competition.
Wildcats juniors Brianna Fernandez (12:43), Emily Gillet (12:44) and Toni Gowen (12:46) and senior Alexa Dube (12:58) all cracked the 13-minute mark. Wilsonville junior Dominique Holman (13:16) took fifth in the novice girls race.
The winners on the girls side were Portland-Grant senior Piper Donaghu (10:13), Portland-Cleveland junior Emma Wren (11:02), Grant sophomore Ella Donaghu (9:57) and West Linn freshman Johanna Briscoe (11:11). Forest Grove senior Corinne Reed (12:32) won the novice girls event.
On the boys side, Josh Meyer led Wilsonville with a 9:58 and placed 17th in a race that featured more than 140 juniors.
Other members of the Wildcats roster who clocked sub-11-minute marks included senior Alex Tomlinson (10:06), junior Kody Wilde (10:13), junior Carlos Villagomes (10:23) and senior Jake Uselman (10:52).
Forest Grove senior Geremia Lizier-Zmudzinski logged the best overall time with an 8:58.
Wilsonvilles season continues Sept. 7 at the Ultimook invitational at Hydrangea Ranch in Tillamook. The squad's conference preview is slated for Sept. 11 at Blue Lake Park in Fairview.
