Girls soccer: Wilsonville tops Ashland in first round of Class 5A state playoffs

Wildcats to face Crescent Valley in quarterfinals Nov. 9

The Wilsonville girls soccer team wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough to defeat Ashland 3-1 in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs Nov. 5 at Randall Stadium.

The third-seeded Wildcats advanced to the Nov. 9 quarterfinals to face Crescent Valley, which defeated Pendleton in the first round. They have reached the quarterfinals for the third-straight season.

Wilsonville (11-3-1) scored its first goal against Ashland when sophomore midfielder Bethany Cerdan took advantage of an opening near the top of the box and launched a high floater towards the net in the 22nd minute. The ball ricocheted off the hands of leaping Grizzlies goalkeeper Sydney Norvell, who tried to make a play on it, and spilled into the net.

The Wildats nearly added a second goal in the 39th minute, but junior forward Riley Johnson’s shot was batted away by Norvell.

Scoring action picked up midway through the second half.

In the 57th minute, the Grizzlies (9-4-2) tied the match at 1-1 when sophomore Jessica Harrower collected a right-corner cross from Sadie Bailey and pushed the ball past Bess Kitzmiller into the left side of the net.

But Wilsonville responded two minutes later, regaining the lead at 2-1 on a rocket by Johnson from about 10 yards out.

Junior midfielder Courtney Antonson sealed the Wildcats’ victory with a goal in the 78th minute.
