Girls soccer: Own goal dooms Wilsonville in 5A semifinal loss to Wilson

Wildcats unable to match Trojans in season-ending setback

by: JEFF GOODMAN - Ali Bourque (24) battles for possession during the Class 5A state semifinals Nov. 12 at Randall Stadium. The Wilsonville girls soccer team finished its season with a loss to Portland-Wilson.In a tightly contested match with scoring at a premium, one mistake doomed the Wilsonville girls soccer team.

On a second-half corner kick by Wilson, the ball bounced off a Wildcats player and zipped into the net before senior goalkeeper Bess Kitzmiller could make a play on it.

It ended up being the only goal of the match, a heartbreaking 1-0 loss for Wilsonville in the Class 5A state semifinals Nov. 12 at Randall Stadium.

The third-seeded Wildcats (12-4-1) finished their season after reaching the penultimate round of the playoffs for the second time in three years, a fact that served as little consolation for a program that has never won a state championship.

“It’s disappointing,” Kitzmiller said. “It’s frustrating to go out like that, especially on an own goal.”

Wilsonville, which had advanced to the semifinals with dominant wins over Ashland and Corvallis-Crescent Valley, had defeated the Trojans (8-6-3) in preseason play.

But Wilson, which was winless through eight games, continued its miraculous turnaround and earned a trip to the state title match for the first time since 1977. It will face Bend-Summit in the finals Nov. 16 at Hillsboro Stadium.

Although the Wildcats gave up just 12 goals in 17 games this year, the final one will probably be difficult to forget.

Wilson was rewarded for its aggressive play with a corner kick in the 64th minute. From the right side, sophomore defender Carly Meyers sent the ball into the box and watched as it ricocheted into the goal off Wilsonville defender Alex Monello.

The Wildcats spent the final 15 minutes trying to manufacture a goal. They got a few feet on a high-arcing ball from the right corner in the 70th minute, but the Trojans cleared it away.

Wilsonville had a few more opportunities in the final two minutes but came away empty-handed.

“We still had a chance,” Kitzmiller said. “We got kind of frantic and started thinking, ‘We’ve just got to get it at the net,’ so we started just kicking it instead of playing feet and moving the ball like we should have. But I thought we had a chance there at the end.”
