Boys win, girls fall as Halverson provides solo highlights

Halverson’s victory in the girls 500-yard freestyle race was among the highlights for the Wilsonville swimming team in its Dec. 12 dual meet against Sandy at the Bignall Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats finished with a split against the Pioneers, winning 91-79 on the boys side but losing 109-61 in the girls competition.

Halverson earned a time of 5 minutes 30.69 seconds in the 500 free, shooting out in front early in the race and building up a 25-yard lead with 200 yards remaining. Gatchell was second in 6:23.06.

Halverson also took first place the 200 individual medley race, posting a time of 2:17.81. The senior was even with Sandy’s Shelbi Hayzlett through the first pool length, but she pulled ahead out of the first turn and steadily increased her lead en route to winning by about seven seconds.

Halverson joined Carolina Ramirez, Emma Harms and Heather Leitz to win the 400 freestyle relay race with a time of 4:19.22. Wilsonville held a comfortable lead for most of the race and pulled away on Halverson’s leg, defeating Sandy by about 16 seconds.

On the boys side, strong performances in the relay races contributed to the Wildcats’ team victory.

In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of Chris Glaess, Derek Webb, Noah Norris and Kyle Ruud clocked a 1:56.22 to place first. In the 400 free relay, Norris, Webb and Glaess joined Isaac Ramirez to finish in 3:53.38 — about 44 seconds ahead of Sandy.

Norris, who transferred to Wilsonville from North Marion, cruised to individual victories in the 200 free (1:53.34) and 500 free (5:30.25). He was not challenged in either event.

Glaess, meanwhile, won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.63 and clocked a 2:21.65 to take second in the 200 individual medley.

Webb snagged top honors in the 100 butterfly with a 1:02.94.

Parker Moore took the 50 freestyle in 26.19 seconds.
