Year in review: Wilsonville sports highlights in 2013
A look at 15 outstanding moments from the last calendar year
There were scores of exciting Wilsonville High School sports moments in 2013. Here are 15 of the most outstanding accomplishments:
Feb. 9: Christie Halverson wins the girls 500-yard freestyle race and leads Wilsonville to a district title in the 400 free relay race during the NWOC championships at Parkrose High School in Portland.
March 9: Dylan Livesay drains a buzzer-beating three-pointer in a 50-47 win over West Albany, securing fourth place for the Wilsonville boys basketball team at the Class 5A championships in Eugene.
April 2: Clayton Gelfand tosses a school-record 17 strikeouts as part of a one-hit, complete-game effort to lead the Wilsonville baseball team in a 2-0 shutout of Milwaukie.
April 24: Jake Jennings throws a no-hitter to lead the Wilsonville baseball team in a 6-0 victory at St. Helens.
May 7: Brett Wolvert earns medalist honors at the Northwest Oregon Conference boys golf tournament with a two-day score of 145 at The Reserve in Aloha.
May 8: Haley Moss captures her first district title with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Sandy junior Hailey Fischer at the NWOC championships at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.
May 21: The Wilsonville girls lacrosse team finishes its season in the state semifinals with a 19-2 record, its only losses coming at the hands of eventual finalists West Linn and Lake Oswego.
May 25: Taryn Rawlings wins state titles in the girls 800- and 1,500-meter races during the OSAA track and field championships at Hayward Field in Eugene. Meanwhile, Johnny Ragin takes top honors in the boys javelin competition and joins the Wildcats for a first-place finish in the 400-meter relay race.
Sept. 17: The Wilsonville volleyball team engineers a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-17) sweep of Sherwood, snapping a nine-match losing streak in the series.
Oct. 11: Rawlings breaks the school record in girls cross-country with a time of 17 minutes 59.7 seconds at Sandelie Golf Course, besting the mark of 18:25 that Melissa Brown clocked in 2004.
Oct. 17: The Wilsonville girls soccer team defeats Sherwood 2-0 at home, earning its first shutout victory in the rivalry series since 2006.
Oct. 23: Rawlings crosses the finish line in 19 minutes 38.0 seconds at Blue Lake Park in Fairview to win the third NWOC district cross-country title of her high school career. That same day, junior Josh Meyer and the Wilsonville boys win a fourth-consecutive NWOC district title.
Oct. 25: Derek Sunkle breaks the Wilsonville football teams single-season rushing record during its comeback win over Sandy, finishing the season with 1,888 yards on 255 carries.
Nov. 2: Trailing two-sets-to-one and playing the end of the match without coach Kristen Rott, who left abruptly for personal medical reasons, the Wilsonville volleyball team earns a 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-6) victory against Crescent Valley to reach the Class 5A quarterfinals for the first time since 2007.
Nov. 9: By shutting out Silverton in the Class 5A quarterfinals, the Wilsonville boys soccer team advances to the state semifinals for the first time since 2002 in a landmark season under coach Ian Reschke.
