Dennis Burke has been chosen as the Class 5A athletic director of the year by the Oregon Athletic Directors Association.
The Wilsonville athletic director, who previously held a variety of administrative, coaching and teaching positions at Canby High School, will be honored at 7 p.m. April 14 at the annual OADA conference banquet at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver.
Fellow athletic directors Ron Molony (Marcola-Mohawk), Kevin Moffatt (Mt. Angel-Kennedy), Ron Miller (Salem-Blanchet Catholic), Jason Boyd (Seaside) and Kris Welch (Hillsboro-Century) will also be recognized.
Burke was named athletic director and associate principal at Wilsonville High School before the 2012-13 school year and replaced the retiring Mike Henderson, who had served as the schools athletic director since 2003.
Burke had worked in the Canby School District since 1983, including 11 years as the athletic director at Canby High School.
Since Burkes arrival, Wilsonville has continued its tradition of excellence in athletics. It has hosted several large-scale sporting events, including state playoff events, this years district wrestling tournament and college lacrosse playoffs last spring.
Earlier this year, Wilsonville hosted Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard as part of an outreach campaign about respect.
Burke, along with Wildcats coach Adam Guenther, exemplified accountability this past fall by reporting to the OSAA a rule violation that forced the football team to forfeit its league win over Milwaukie.
The upcoming OADA banquet costs $35 per person. For more information, visit www.oadaonline.org.
