Whitworth senior, Linfield junior earn top-six finishes
Two former members of the Wilsonville boys golf team have become key cogs in the collegiate Northwest Conference.
Whitworth senior Jesse Salzwedel and Linfield junior Logan Munson both earned top-six finishes April 5-6 at the NWC Spring Classic, which was held at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick, Wash.
Salzwedel shot a 76-78 (154) to tie Pacific Lutherans Dustin Hegge for fourth place out of 43 competitors on the par-72, 6,854-yard course, while Munson carded an 82-75 (157) to tie PLUs Justin Lee for sixth on the individual leaderboard.
Stephen Plopper logged a 76-75 (151) to win the tournament.
Salzwedel helped the Pirates take top honors in the team standings, finishing with a total of 618 strokes. Munson and Linfield (654) tied Puget Sound for fourth in the nine-team competition.
Its already been another strong spring for Salzwedel, an accounting major who earned first-team all-league honors last year.
The Tualatin product earned medalist honors at the UPS Invitational last month at Fircrest Country Club in Tacoma, Wash., shooting a two-under 69 to capture first place after entering the final round tied for ninth.
Munson, meanwhile, finished with a team-best score in Kennewick thanks to his 75-stroke effort amid windy conditions in the second round.
I made a few good putts, the economics major said in a Linfield news release. I kept my cool most of the time and had some good luck selecting the right club to use. With the wind, it was really important to pick the right club.
Salzwedel and Munson helped Wilsonville take fourth place at the Class 5A state championships in 2010. Salzwedel also won the individual title that year.
Both golfers are both expected to compete at the NWC championships, which are slated for April 26-27 at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.
