Softball: Lauren Bell, Kylee Allen carry Wilsonville past Milwaukie in NWOC opener

Wildcats snap seven-game skid with shutout victory

Lauren Bell and Kylee Allen led the Wilsonville softball team to a 4-0 win over Milwaukie in its league opener at home April 15.

Bell threw a complete-game shutout, giving up just three hits and one walk while recording three strikeouts against the Mustangs.

“She kept them off balance the entire time,” said first-year coach Mick Johnson, who also credited the defense behind her. “She did a very good job keeping them in check.

“Lauren is very consistent in keeping batters aware of the strike zone. She hits her corners very well.”

Bell has become a reliable accomplice in the circle for senior pitcher Sarah Harms.

“It’s good to have two capable young ladies to control that position,” Johnson said.

Bell helped her own cause with a solid effort at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Allen, meanwhile, celebrated her birthday in style by scoring or driving in every run for the Wildcats.

Wilsonville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after a bunt by Allen, who made it home on two Milwaukie errors.

The Wildcats tacked on three more runs in the third inning. After singles by Bell and Hannah Lopez, Allen smacked a two-run triple to extend the team’s edge to 3-0. Stephanie Stamnes then brought in Allen on Wilsonville’s fourth-consecutive hit.

Center fielder Skyler Matthews made what was arguably the defensive play of the game in the fourth inning, robbing Milwaukie of an extra-base hit with an over-the-shoulder catch.

“Her quickness allowed her to make the play, and she squelched any potential rally,” Johnson said.

Wilsonville, which had no errors as it snapped a seven-game losing streak, is scheduled to face Putnam on the road April 18.

“That got us off to a good start in league,” Johnson said. “We’ve been playing competitive ball, and we’re learning through each game experience.”
