Boys golf: Wilsonville battling St. Helens for NWOC's second state bid

It all comes down to the district tournament.

The Wilsonville boys golf team has made a routine of going to the state tournament as a group, qualifying in six of the seven years since the OSAA created six athletic classes.

But the fate of this year’s lineup depends solely on how the Wildcats perform at the Northwest Oregon Conference championships, which are slated for May 12-13 at The Reserve in Aloha.

With Sherwood owning the top spot in the NWOC standings, third-place Wilsonville is battling second-place St. Helens for the league’s other berth to the Class 5A finals May 19-20 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

In seven league tournaments this year, the Wildcats have earned runner-up honors three times and finished in third place four times.

“I definitely think we have a shot of qualifying for state,” Wilsonville coach Jeff Deeder said. “St. Helens has been a solid team all season, and if we are going to finish ahead of them at districts it will require a great effort from all of our players. The guys on the team know this.”

Standout junior Chan Lee and sophomore Jake Bell will spearhead the Wildcats’ district lineup, which also includes Blake Crane, Spencer Chames and Kris McCormick.

Lee carded a team-best 78 in the regular-season finale May 5 at Resort at the Mountain in Welches, where Wilsonville shot a 328 to finish behind the Bowmen (282) and the Lions (315). He received first-team all-conference honors last year.

“Chan has been one of the best players for the last three years, so it’s no surprise to see him play well this year,” Deeder said. “All I can do is support him as he continues to work and improve his game.”

Bell, meanwhile, has demonstrated improvement in his chipping and putting skills since joining the program last season. He posted an 81 in Welches.

“Jake was one of our better freshmen last year, and this year he has matured as a player and developed a really strong short game that has allowed him to be one of the best players in the NWOC,” Deeder said. “He is excited to play at districts and play up to his potential to finish in the top five individually in the league.”
