Making time for reading

Lowrie Primary School library will be open Aug. 14

If your child’s idea of a perfect summer day includes a good book, you might want to mark this date on your family’s calendar.

The library at Lowrie Primary School will be open to students Aug. 14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. At that time, avid readers can check out books from the library to take home. Those who aren’t tempted by books can enjoy reconnecting with school friends and teachers while enjoying a cookie or two.by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: VERN UYETAKE - Mia Carroll, 10, shares a book with her sister, Ava, 8, at Lowrie on July 10.

The library has been open on three occasions already this summer, with up to 20 children attending each time. Making library books available serves two purposes, said third-grade teacher April Brenden-Locke. The first is simply to keep kids reading over the long summer break.

“When kids have access to books, it helps create a culture of curiosity,” she said.

The second goal is to help them stay connected with the school community.

“We’re a new school and we want to maintain ties over the summer,” Brenden-Locke said.

Kimberley Rhoades, a library assistant at Lowrie, was eager to help students check out books to take home.

“Some kids here can’t get to the library,” Rhoades said. Because Lowrie is located in a neighborhood dense with houses, many children are able to walk to the school and “get some brain food,” she added.

“A school is an essential part of the community,” Rhoades said. “Why can’t we keep doing it all summer long?”by: PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: VERN UYETAKE - Mia Carroll, 10, and her sister, Ava, 8, found some good books to read at Lowrie on July 10.

Brenden-Locke said the school has a plan to make even more books available to students. She and others are collecting gently used books to create a bookstore at Lowrie. Next year, the store will be open during vacations, selling books for 25 cents each.

“So far, we’ve collected about 600 books,” she said, “and we’re working to collect more.”
