Volunteer judges needed for science fair

West Linn-Wilsonville’s Center for Research in Environmental Sciences and Technology is seeking volunteer judges for the CREST-Jane Goodall Science Symposium. Judges are particularly needed for behavioral and social sciences this year, and people with degrees in psychiatry, psychology, counseling, sociology and social work are encouraged to participate. Judges with degrees in engineering and the sciences are always needed.

More than 300 students have been developing and carrying out original research projects. The judging session for the ISEF-affiliated high school science fair will be Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Prepare for finals at WHS

Freshmen students are invited to attend Link Crew’s annual Cocoa and Cram event Jan. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the library at Wilsonville High School. The event provides an opportunity for freshmen to study for their first high school final exams. Students will be paired with their Link Crew leaders.

Attend Transfer Day at CCC

Clackamas Community College’s annual Transfer Day will take place Jan. 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gregory Forum. A statewide collaboration between Oregon’s community colleges and four-year universities, the event provides students an opportunity to meet with representatives from state universities, private and out-of-state colleges. Participants will gain insight into each school’s offerings, admission requirements, recommended courses, costs, financial aid opportunities and tools to make seamless transitions.Colleges participating in this year’s event include Pacific, George Fox, University of Oregon, National American University, Pacific Northwest College of Art, University of Phoenix, Marylhurst, Washington State-Vancouver, Western Oregon and many others. Add support school to calendar

Students at Wilsonville High School are invited to attend Student Support School Jan. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students who are struggling or in danger of falling behind already have been invited to attend. Any WHS student is welcome. Staff members and student tutors will be available to offer assistance.

Learn about dual language program

Parents can learn about the West Linn-Wilsonville School District’s Spanish-English dual language program at an informational meeting Jan. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Lowrie Primary School in Wilsonville.

The school district offers the dual-language program at two schools, Trillium Creek Primary School in West Linn as well as at Lowrie. Enrollment in the program is open each year in kindergarten to students from all West Linn-Wilsonville neighborhood schools. Childcare will be provided at the meeting.

Registration for the dual language program occurs at the student’s home school through the kindergarten registration paperwork. One of the forms includes a section where families can express interest in placing their child in the program. If there is more interest than space available, a lottery will be held Feb. 3.

Check immunization status

Are your students in compliance with all their shots? Feb. 19 is exclusion day, and students who are not in compliance with immunization requirements will not be allowed to return to school following that date. Parents already should have received notification from the West Linn-Wilsonville School District’s health services department if their child’s records are not up to date. Plan for early release

Teachers in West Linn-Wilsonville schools are scheduled for a professional growth session day Jan. 15. All students in the district will be released early that day. Professional growth dates occur each month. Check with the office at your child’s school for the exact release time and for information about early-release bus routes.

Register for kindergarten

It’s time to start registering incoming kindergarten students for the 2014-15 school year. Parents can pick up registration forms at their neighborhood school office or download forms from the school district’s website at Completed forms can be turned in to school offices at any time.

All-day kindergarten will continue to be tuition-based, with monthly payments of $390. A $125 deposit will be required at the time of registration; the deposit will be applied to the first month’s tuition. Scholarships are available. All-day kindergarten will be available at every school, and confirmation will be provided to families who register by Feb. 3. Half-day kindergarten is offered with no tuition payment and will be available at schools if demand allows.

Families who are interested in learning about dual-language kindergarten classes at Lowrie Primary School in Wilsonville and at Trillium Creek Primary School in West Linn should plan to attend an informational session Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. at Lowrie, 28995 SW Brown Road.

Apply for CCC scholarships

A scholarship kickoff session is planned for Jan. 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m in the McLoughlin Auditorium. Attendees will receive information about the new CCC scholarship application and receive tips to help them write a winning essay and search for external scholarships. There is no charge to attend the session.

Flash Alert is a system that the West Linn-Wilsonville School District uses to notify parents about inclement weather conditions that impact whether schools will be open. Parents can subscribe to the Flash Alert system to receive emails and/or text messages when such circumstances arise.
