BedMart returns to Wilsonville

Wilsonville recorded yet another economic gain recently with the announcement that BedMart Mattress Superstores has opened new corporate headquarters on Southwest Commerce Circle. In a way, however, it’s a case of coming full circle.

The company formerly operated a BedMart retail store in Wilsonville, but it recently was closed. The decision to transfer its corporate headquarters from North Portland, however, more than makes up for that.

BedMart will now be based out of a 40,000-square-foot building at 10200 SW Commerce Circle in north Wilsonville. The company reported that the newly remodeled facility, which opened April 5, will house up to 30 employees.

The company continues to operate stores in Salem, Portland and Bend.

Wilsonville woman hired by marketing firm

Portland firm Rosenberg Marketing announced last week it has hired Wilsonville native Monica Komperda as its new account coordinator. Komperda has experience with both advertising and public relations.

Rosenberg Marketing is a full-service marketing agency focusing on traditional and online (social) public relations.

“When I became exposed to public relations I realized I had discovered my passion. I am beyond excited to start this journey with Rosenberg Marketing,” said Komperda. “Each day is not complete until I feel that I have brought something to the table for every client. PGE awards Oregon Tech-Wilsonville $10,000

Oregon Tech has secured a $10,000 grant from Portland General Electric Foundation to support scholarships for undergraduate students. This grant will be used to fund four scholarships of $2,500 apiece to qualified Oregon Tech engineering undergraduates at the Wilsonville campus.

The scholarship is funded by the PGE Foundation, and is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible Oregon Tech students pursuing their undergraduate degree in engineering. The foundation actively supports the tri-county Portland metropolitan community in which they work and live by providing opportunities to students pursuing a degree in engineering.

Transportation sector a growing partner for Mentor Graphics

System-level design is driving demand for printed circuit board CAD tools like those produced by Mentor Graphics, company CEO Walden Rhines told Printed Circuit and Design Fab online magazine in a recent interview.

According to the magazine, Mentor set all-time company booking and revenue records for printed circuit board CAD (computer aided design) software in the quarter that ended Jan. 31. Further, the company’s Integrated System Design unit, which includes printed circuit board products, saw first quarter bookings rise 40 percent, in part because of additional business from Finmeccanica, Denso and General Electric.

Rhines told the magazine that strong demand from the automotive and telecommunications sector for system-level tools is leading to three trends: demand for more precise program emulation; increased attention to thermal analysis; and greater electronics complexity. The last reportedly forces chip designers away from traditional “build-and-debug” processes toward to an increasing use of other simulation tools.

“People who are doing large chips find that simulation is only adequate for the blocks within those chips, and that full-chip verification and especially software verification requires the addition of emulation,” Rhines told the magazine during a conference call.

Rhines went on to compare trends in the transportation industry to the earlier transformation undergone a half-century ago by the semiconductor industry.

This is leading to rising demand for Mentor’s products among automakers. Currently, the Wilsonville-based firm takes in about half its annual revenue from systems companies, compared with 15 percent from transportation companies.

Wilsonville company announces expansion

Wilsonville company DWFritz Automation Inc. recently announced it has created a new division of the company to serve advanced manufacturing businesses with standardized assembly and automation equipment.

Named DFW Products, the new division is already online, said Jake VanderZanden, vice president of corporate development.

“We’ve created this new business unit to showcase and deliver our precision technologies to volume-based automation and manufacturing customers who demand brilliant, value-based solutions,” said VanderZanden. “We have a strong product roadmap and expect significant growth in the next several years.”

The first product put to market by DWF Products is the M1500 Micro Fastener System. This product was developed for the consumer electronics manufacturing industry to automatically insert PennEngineering’s microPEM self-clinching TackPin fasteners as an alternative to screws or spot welds. It is intended for makers of phones, tablets, keyboards and related goods who want thinner, more cost-effective products.

It is used for assembly of small electronic devices ranging from the size of a standard cellphone to a 15-inch laptop computer. It offers significantly lower unit cost, better speed and accuracy and less scrap created from error, according to the company.

Wilsonville’s SAM Medical releases new device

SAM Medical Products of Wilsonville recently announced it has received 510(k) regulatory clearance from the Federal Drug Administration for the release for sale of the SAM Junctional Tourniquet, a type of pelvic sling.

Building upon the successful SAM Pelvic Sling II presently used by health care organizations around the world for immobilizing pelvic fractures, the new sling is designed to also control bleeding where standard tourniquets would not be effective. Such wounds are typically junctional in nature, such as a high-level leg amputation as a result of an IED blast injury, according to the company. The SAM Junctional Tourniquet’s simple design allows application in standard industry training models for hemorrhage control in less than 25 seconds in most cases.

It also is small and can easily be carried in a medical bag or attached to a backpack, according to the company.

Recent studies indicate that junctional hemorrhage accounts for up to 20 percent of preventable deaths in combat. The new product was designed using input from military medical personnel.

One of the key features of the new device is the so-called Target Compression Device, which is inflated to apply the necessary amount of pressure to a wound.

“We designed the SAM Junctional Tourniquet as an easy-to-use, multi-purpose product that can be applied quickly in life-threatening situations,” Adrian Polliack, president of SAM Medical Products, said in a press release. “We worked directly with key military medical and scientific personnel along the product development and testing pathway to ensure the product met the rigid requirements associated with medical devices used in the challenging combat battlefield arena.”

The device was available in the United States April 2 and will be released internationally April 27.

Zoomcare opens new Wilsonville clinic

ZoomCare took another step to expand patient access to primary health care services in the Portland metropolitan area by opening its newest clinic in Wilsonville at 25600 SW Argyle Ave.
