the editor: An April fools joke is being played upon America by the Chinese Communists (Chi-Coms), but perhaps we can have the last laugh. On Sunday, April 1, our U.S. Navy surveillance plane flying over international waters collided with a Chi-Com fighter jet, causing 24 crewmen to make an emergency landing on Hainan Island off the Chinese mainland. We asked the Chi-Coms not to board the plane — they did anyway. We asked them not to capture the crew — they did anyway. We asked them not to tamper or remove the top secret equipment aboard our plane — they did anyway. And we continue to ask them not to detain our plane — and they do anyway. Is there a pattern here? Yes, and it has been going on for years. In a nutshell, the Chi-Coms have been buying or stealing America’s nuclear defense secrets and undermining our national defense. They are taking us to be the consummate fool, and not just on April 1. So what can we do? I suggest we begin by not purchasing “made in (Communist) China” goods. Look, China ranks second in our international imbalance of trade, meaning we buy far more from them than they buy from us. That in itself should make us change our buying habits, but add to it the Chi-Coms increasing brazen and belligerent attitude toward America, and the direction becomes undeniable. So don’t be fooled ... boycott “made in (Communist) China” goods and have the last laugh. Gary Goodman Powell Butte
