Portland police successfully talked a man suffering a possible mental health crisis in a downtown apartment building into surrendering Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the man has been seen hanging partly out of his sixth-floor apartment window and may be armed with a knife. The man’s name has not been released.

After more than two hours, the man was eventually calmed and agreed to go to a local hospital for treatment.

According to police, at about 12:49 p.m. April 28, Central Precinct officers were called to the Morrison Apartments, 1959 S.W. Morrison St., after a man was heard screaming inside an apartment. Officers requested medical personnel and firefighters to help.

All lanes of West Burnside Street were closed both directions at 17th to 20th avenues as officers talked with the man.
