Winterhawks explode for 6-2 win at Tri-City

Blake Heinrich was one of six Portland Winterhawks with a goal in Wednesday's 6-2 victory at Tri-City.

KENNEWICK, Wash. — The Portland Winterhawks took out some frustrations on Wednesday, blitzing the Tri-City Americans 6-2 in Western Hockey League play.

The Hawks, who had lost three games in a row, took a 3-0 lead after 7:37 and went on to build their lead to 5-0 midway through the second period.

Six Portland players scored a goal before the announced crowd of 2,832, and another Hawk, defenseman Jack Dougherty, had three assists.

Blake Heinrich had two assists to go with his goal.

Recent addition Rihards Bukarts opened the scoring on a power play at 2:30. Dominic Turgeon and Alex Schoenborn added goals for the 3-0 lead.

Then it was Alex Overhardt and Henrich bumping the lead to five.

After Tri-City goals at 14:05 of the second period and 8:09 of the third period, Keegan Iverson struck for Portland on a power play at 14:38.

With Adin Hill off on Team Canada duties, Michael Bullion went the distance in goal for Portland and made 29 saves.

The Hawks were 5 for 5 on the penalty kill.

The Winterhawks outshot the Ams 34-31.

Portland improved to 8-9, while Tri-City slipped to 6-11-1-0.

The Hawks’ next outing is 7 p.m. Friday against the Swift Current Broncos at Memorial Coliseum.
