Critics release video to campaign against Kalama methanol plant

Columbia Riverkeeper has released a short film to press their campaign against a proposed $1.8 billion methanol refinery in Kalama, Wash. The environmental group argues that allowing the world’s largest natural gas-to-methanol refinery in the Columbia River town northwest of Portland will use more natural gas than all the industry in Washington combined, and lock in use of the fossil fuel for decades. Opponents are calling on Washington Gov. Jay Inslee to deny the project. To see the video: http://bit.ly/Stop_Methanol.

NW Innovation Works is proposing the project at the Port of Kalama. It would receive natural gas via pipeline, and convert it to methanol at the facility, then ship the product overseas. The company says it will employ 200 full-time workers, plus 1,000 during construction.

A final Environmental Impact Statement for the project was released Sept. 30. For more information from NW Innovation:http://nwinnovationworks.com/projects/port-of-kalama
