Oregon’s Rich Brooks, on the eve of the Stanford football game, declares that this year’s Ducks are the best team he’s had in 12 seasons as coach. UO then defeats the Cardinal, 7-3, before 39,089 at Autzen Stadium. Latin Berry scores on a three-yard run with 8:53 remaining to push Oregon to 3-0, despite a sprained ankle suffered by QB Bill Musgrave.

• At Lewis & Clark College, new coach Tom Smythe’s team goes to 2-0 with a 35-21 victory over Eastern Oregon. Mike Fanger gives the Pioneers a dual threat at QB.

• Trail Blazers draft picks Arvydas Sabonis (Soviet Union), Rolando Ferreria (Brazil) and guard Drazen Petrovic (Yugoslavia) are playing in the Olympics at Seoul, South Korea.

Also at Seoul, Mary Slaney falters in the women’s 3,000-meter finals and finishes 10th.

• Dick Gray is returning to coach Benson High boys basketball. No. 2 on Oregon’s all-time list for coaching victories in the sport, he was dismissed from the Tech job in 1986, but got his job back by decision of the U.S. District Court.

• Lincoln has posted its first football victory over Grant (9-7) since 1966.

• The Jefferson Democrats boys cross country team is favored to win the Portland Interscholastic League championship.

• Portland lacks adequate all-weather swimming pools and should spend up to $30 million to build new ones and repair its current ones, says a task force report commissioned by City Commissioner Mike Lindberg.
