Oregon DMV nixing change of address stickers on IDs

Oregon’s Department of Motor Vehicles is expecting to save about $550,000 a year in printing and postage costs when it ceases mailing address stickers to residents as of Jan. 1, 2020.

Oregon law requires driver license, permit and ID card holders to file a change of address with the DMV within 30 days of moving to a new address within Oregon. Upon filing that change, currently, the DMV mails out an address sticker that residents are required to apply to their card. No more.

As of Jan. 1, when Oregon residents update their addresses with DMV, they will no longer be required to apply that sticker. In fact, the DMV will not even be sending them out.

The change comes under House Bill 57, which passed during the 2019 legislative session. With the bill, Oregon joins the vast majority of states in ending the use of the stickers. As of Jan. 1, only Connecticut and Michigan will still require use of the stickers.

Even though the stickers will be no more, it’s still important to keep your address current with the DMV. This helps ensure you receive vital information such as driver license and vehicle registration renewal reminders.
