Longtime rabbi of Neveh Shalom dies

Rabbi Joshua Stampfer, rabbi emeritus at Congregation Neveh Shalom in Portland, died Thursday, Dec. 26, at the age of 97.

His birthday is Saturday, Dec. 28.
According to a private internment for family members only is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at Congregation Neveh Shalom, 2900 S.W. Peaceful Lane, Portland. The service will be followed by a meal of consolation, also at the synagogue.
The family will sit shiva and will receive visitors at the Stampfer home, 2800 Peaceful Lane, from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Dec. 30 to Jan. 2, and from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3.

Shiva Minyanim are scheduled for Monday through Thursday evenings, 7 p.m., Dec. 30 to Jan. 2, in the Stampfer Chapel at Congregation Neveh Shalom.
The Oregonian reports that Stampfer served as the rabbi at Congregation Neveh Shalom from 1954 to 1993. He founded Camp Solomon Schechter, near Tumwater, Washington; established the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center and the Institute for Judaic Studies;, built the Oregon Jewish Historical Society; and helped found the Oregon Jewish Museum.
