Silvertips edge Winterhawks in OT

Marcus Nguyen and James Stefan each scored two goals and the Portland Winterhawks blitzed the Tri-City Americans 8-0 on Sunday, Jan. 30, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

A five-goal second period ensured Portland would win its seventh consecutive game and complete a sweep of three weekend games.

In 11 January games, the Winterhawks won 10 and lost the other in a shootout.

Cross Hanus and Stefan scored goals in the first 6:13 to set the tone.

The second-period onslaught featured both of Nguyen’s goals along with tallies from Kyle Chyzowski, Luke Schelter and Aidan Litke.

Stefan added a third-period goal to join Tyson Kozak as a 20-goal scorer for Portland.

The Winterhawks outshot the Americans 40-17. Goalie Taylor Gauthier posted his first shutout of the season and improved to 7-0-0-0 since joining Portland.

Hanas had three assists along with his goal, a four-point night that pushes him to a team-leading 44 points (30 assists).

Schelter had a three-point game with two assists, and Nguyen had an assist with his two goals.

A total of 13 Winterhawks had points Sunday.

After three consecutive three-game weekends, Portland opens a travel-heavy February by visiting Tri-City on Friday, Feb. 4, and Spokane on Saturday, Feb. 5, the first of five consecutive games between the Hawks and Chiefs. The Winterhawks play only three home games in February, the next one on Feb. 9 against Spokane.

Pasternak out for season — After Sunday’s game, Winterhawks VP/GM/coach Mike Johnston said that forward Dawson Pasternak suffered a season-ending knee injury in a Jan. 21 game at Tri-City. An 18-year-old winger from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Pasternak had five goals and nine assists in 34 games this season, his first in the WHL.
