Scoresheet: Sabrina Ionescu posts her second WNBA triple-double

SUNDAY, JUNE 12

Triple-double for Ionescu — Former Oregon star Sabrina Ionescu became the youngest WNBA player with multiple triple-doubles on Sunday. She had 27 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists as her New York Liberty fell to the Chicago Sky 88-86. Ionescu became the first WNBA player to have a triple-double in only three quarters of a game.

Ionescu, 24, had her first pro triple-double in May 2021. Despite the loss, New York is 4-2 in its last six games and Ionescu is averaging 24 points, 6.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists in those games.

Red Sox 2, Mariners 0 — Six Boston pitchers limited Seattle to one hit and Rafael Devers hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning as the Red Sox capped an 8-2 road trip with the win at Seattle.

Devers hit an 0-2 fastball from Paul Sewald over the left-field wall with two out in the eighth.

Catcher Luis Torrens’ two-out single in the fifth inning was Seattle’s loan hit.

AquaSox 1, Hops 0 — A second-inning run was all visiting Everett needed for its 11th consecutive win over Hillsboro. Everett won all six games in the series at Ron Tonkin Field and the Hops (16-29) have dropped 11 games in a row.

A leadoff walk to Victor Labrada followed by a single and sacrifice fly plated the only run of the game off of Hops starter Scott Randall.

Both teams had five hits. Neyfy Castillo had two hits including a double for Hillsboro.

SATURDAY, JUNE 11

Auburn wins Game 1 — The Auburn Tigers took the first game of the Corvallis Super Regional, beating Oregon State 7-5 Saturday at Goss Stadium.

Game 2 is 7 p.m. Sunday (ESPN2), with the Beavers needing to win to force a decisive third game on Monday.

OSU (47-17) took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run from Garret Forrester and a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Dernedde. But the Auburn bullpen kept the Beavers quiet until the ninth, when Jacob Melton hit an RBI double with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate. Blake Burkhalter struck out Gavin Logan to end the game.

With OSU ace Cooper Hjerpe ill and unavailable, Jake Pfennigs started on the mound but lasted only 2.2 innings. He allowed five runs, with four walks and four hits.

T2 falls again — Jamin Gogo Peters scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, but Portland Timbers 2 remained winless with a 2-1 loss to North Texas SC on Saturday at Arlington Texas. T2 (0-8-2, 4 points) will shoot for its first win in MLS NEXT Pro play at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 19 when when Houston Dynamo 2 visits Hillsboro Stadium.

Mariners 7, Red Sox 6 — Abraham Toro ands Dylan Moore hit consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the ninth as Seattle (27-32) rallied past visiting Boston (31-29). Toro’s bloop hit into shallow right-center field played J.P. Crawford with the tying run and Moore lashed a hit into deep center field to plate the winning run. Seattle had 13 hits, three of them from Crawford and two from Julio Rodriguez, who hit his eighth homer of the season.

Pickles rained out — For the second day in a row, rain was the winner at Walker Stadium. Portland and Corvallis will try to play two on Sunday, with the first game slated for 4 p.m.

AquaSox 5, Hops 2 — Hillsboro dropped its seventh game in a row, and 10th in a row to visiting Everett. The Hops were limited to four hits and fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Hillsboro pitchers issued at least eight walks for the fourth consecutive game.

Pro golf — Wyndham Clark, a former Oregon golfer, is tied for third in the Canadian Open at Toronto, three strokes back of leaders Rory McIlroy and Tony Finau entering Sunday’s final round at St. Georges Golf Course.

The first tournament of the controversial new LIV Golf Series was won by Charl Schwartzel, who took home the $4 million first prize at the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational London. The next stop on the new tour is its United Sates’ debut June 30-July 2 at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains.

Nitro drop pair — Portland’s American Ultimate Disc League team has lost four in a row after a pair of narrow losses in Southern California. The LA Aviators edged the Portland Nitro 17-16 on June 10 and the San Diego Growlers beat Portland 20-18 on June 11.

The Nitro are 2-5, with their last three losses by a total of four goals.

After a weekend off, the next three Nitro games are at Providence Park, beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26 against the Oakland Spiders.

Florida women win track title — The Florida women followed in the footsteps of the Gator men, winning the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field team championship on Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene. Kemba Nelson finished second in the 100 and helped Oregon to third in the 4×100 relay as the Ducks finished 11th in team scoring.

FRIDAY, JUNE 10

Micah Williams seventh — Oregon sophomore Micah Williams finished seventh in the final of the 100-meter dash at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene.

It was a disappointing result for the Benson High graduate, who entered the meet with the fastest time (9.86) in the nation and unbeaten in college meets this spring.

Running in lane 5, Williams was with the leaders until the midpoint of the race, when he appeared to lose momentum as Florida’s Joseph Fahnbulleh surged past the field to win in a personal-best 10.0.

Fahnbulleh, an Olympic finalist in the 200 last summer for Liberia, won the 200 later Friday as he helped the Gators win the men’s team title.

The women’s team title will be decided Saturday. The heptathlon continues at 10:30 a.m., field events at 2 p.m. and track events at 2:30 p.m., when TV coverage begins on ESPN.

Former Duck leads Canadian Open — Wyndham Clark, a former Oregon golfer, leads the Canadian Open at Toronto by one stroke over five golfers, including defending champion Rory McIlroy.

DeChambeau latest to join LIV — Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open Champion, is the latest golfer to leave the PGA Tour to. join the new LIV Golf Invitational Series.

Reports indicate DeChambeau will make his LIV Golf debut when the new tour makes its United States debut June 30-July 2 at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains.

AquaSox 9, Hops 3 — Visiting Everett (25-29) scored six runs in the sixth inning at Ron Tonkin Field and extended Hillsboro’s season-long string of losses to six games.

Adrian Del Castillo knocked in all three runs with a home run and a double as Hillsboro (26-27) led 3-0 through five innings.

Red Sox 4, Mariners 3 — Bobby Dalbec hit a leadoff home run to break a 2-2 tie in a two-run seventh for Boston (31-28) as the Mariners (26-32) returned to T-Mobile Park.

Jesse Winker hit a tying two-run homer in the fifth for Seattle and Ty France and Luis Torrens each had two hits. But the Mariners were 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners.

Andres Munoz took the loss, giving up two hits and hitting a batter in the decisive seventh inning.

Pickles rained out — The first game of a three-game series with Corvallis at Walker Stadium was rained out and rescheduled as part of a Sunday doubleheader, with the first of two games slated to start at 4:05 p.m. The Pickles and Knights play at 7 p.m. Saturday.

OSU softball — Beavers coach Laura Berg and her assistant coaches Marcie Green, Eric Leyba and Shelly Prochaska have been selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as a Division I Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. They are one of 10 nominees for the organizations national coaching staff of the year, to be announced, June 23.

Kraken sign forward — Seattle signed 22-year-old Finnish forward Ville Petman to a two-year contract. Playing in Finland’s top professional league, Petman (5-10, 181) had 15 goals and 24 assists in 59 games last season.

Winterhawks goalie prospect selected — Luke Brennen, a 16-year-old goalie from Warman, Saskachewan, is one of 10 goalies and 37 Western Hockey League prospects invited to Hockey Canada’s national under-17 development camp, scheduled July 10-16.

THURSDAY, JUNE 9

Hjerpe finalist for two awards — Oregon State pitcher Cooper Hjerpe has been named one of five finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the nation’s best player by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Hjerpe is also one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award.

The left-handed pitcher enters the Super Regional with a 10-2 record, a 2.40 ERA and nation leading 155 strikeouts. He’s five strikeouts away from a single season OSU record. Hjerpe is averaging 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings and has opponents hitting only .182 off of him.

AquaSox 4, Hops 2 — Hillsboro (26-26) dropped a third consecutive game at home to visiting Everett (24-29) on Thursday. Tied at two going into the ninth, Hillsboro walked home a run with the bases loaded then hit the next batter to bring home a second run. Hillsboro went down in order in the bottom half.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8

Micah Williams advances — Oregon sophomore Micah Williams ran the fastest qualifying time during Wednesday’s semifinal round of the men’s 100 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene.

A Benson High grad, Williams was timed in 10.03 seconds, the fastest time by .07 ahead of Florida State’s JoVaughn Martin.

The 100 came after Williams and the Ducks missed out on advancing in the 4×100 relay. Oregon’s time of 39.00 seconds was .01 slower than the ninth-place time that advanced.

The 100-meter final is scheduled for 6:52 p.m. Friday (ESPN2).

Boston Celtics 116, Golden State Warriors 100 — The Celtics, coached by Portland native Ime Udoka, took a 2-1 series lead in the NBA Finals with the home win.

Jaylen Brown had 27 points, Jayson Tatum 26 and Marcus Smart 24 for the Celtics.

Mariners 6, Houston 3 — Seattle (26-31) took two out of three games at the American League West Division-leading Astros (36-21).

Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer and Ty France a solo shot.

Logan Gilbert allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings.

After an off day Thursday, the Mariners play host to the Boston Red Sox at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners won all three road series on the trip, including at Texas and at Baltimore.

Everett 8, Hops 4 — Hillsboro (26-25) dropped the home game as Andy Thomas hit a two-run homer for the AquaSox.

Danny Oriente drove in two runs and A.J. Vukovich had an RBI triple for Hillsboro.

Portland Pickles 4, Edmonton 1 — The Pickles (5-3) won on the road again as Kyler Stancato, Payton Allen and Jose Ruiz hit solo homers and Gary Grosjean allowed two hits and one run (on a homer) in five innings.

Freshman All-American — Oregon and Oregon State put players on the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American list.

Oregon State pitchers Ryan Brown and Jacob Kmatz and second baseman Travis Bazzana have made the list.

Brown has nine saves and a 5-1 record. Kmatz has an 8-2 record. Bazzana is hitting .308 with 15 doubles, four triples, five homers, 43 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

Oregon first baseman Jacob Walsh made the list. He hit .295 with six homers, 18 doubles and 38 RBIs.

Edmonton wins — The Oil Kings beat Seattle 3-2 in Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead in the Western Hockey League finals. Logan Dowhaniuk scored with 4.7 seconds left in the third period.

Game 5 is Saturday in Edmonton. With a win, the Oil Kings claim the Ed Chynoweth Cup and advance to the Memorial Cup tournament.

WICC soccer dates announced — The women’s soccer champions from France, England and Mexico will join the Portland Thorns Aug. 17 and Aug. 20 at Providence Park for the 2022 Women’s International Challenge Cup.

The Thorns are the defending champions of the event, staged by Relevent Sports Group and billed as the competition to decide the women’s soccer club world champion.

In the semifinals on Aug. 17, Olympique Lyonnais will face Chelsea FC while Portland faces C.F. Monterrey of Mexico. Olympique Lyonnais won the French championship and the UEFA Women’s Champions League title. Lyon includes Thorns midfielder Lindsey Horan, who is on loan to the French club through 2023. Chelsea, the champions of England, feature Australian Sam Kerr, the NWSL’s leader in career goals before moving to Chelsea.

Tickets go on sale on June 21.

TUESDAY, JUNE 7

Super Regional times set — Oregon State will host Auburn in the NCAA baseball Super Regionals beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday. Game two will start at 7 p.m. Sunday and, if necessary, game three will be Monday, time to be determined. The first two games will air on ESPN2.

AquaSox 7, Hops 1 — Hillsboro (26-24) opened up this week’s homestand with a loss to Everett (22-29) after giving up 13 hits to the AquaSox. Everett scored two runs in the first and never looked back as the Hops’ lone run came in the sixth on an Adrian Del Castillo solo home run to right center field.

Astros 4, Mariners 1 — Seattle (25-31) ran into the Justin Verlander buzz saw once more, striking out 12 times against the Houston (36-20) veteran as he moved into 17th all-time in career strikeouts. The Mariners’ lone run came in the fourth when Abraham Toro brought home a run on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.

Storm 72, Dream 60 — Seattle (6-5) ended its two-game losing streak behind a big third quarter at home against visiting Atlanta (7-5). The Storm outscored the Dream 26-14 in the third frame as Jewell Loyd went off. The guard finished with 26 points and pitched in four rebounds and three assists. Breanna Stewart had 19 and seven rebounds to help supplement Loyd’s night. Seattle heads to Dallas next and plays at 5 p.m. Friday.

MONDAY, JUNE 6

Edmonton 10, Portland Pickles 9 — Portland led the West Coast League road game at the Riverhawks 9-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.

But, Edmonton scored on a sacrifice fly, and then won the game when its runner scored on a wild pitch.

The Pickles are 3-3 on the young season. They led 9-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but gave up three runs to the Riverhawks, setting up the ninth inning.

For Portland, Drake Anderson had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Luke Folsom had two hits, an RBI and run scored. Dalton Mashore had a triple and two RBIs.

James, Ngata — Two Oregon greats, running back LaMichael James and defensive lineman Haloti Ngata, have been named to the 2023 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

They are among 80 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision on the ballot.

Members of National Football Foundation vote on Hall of Fame induction, and an “Honors Court” deliberates and selects the class.

James was a two-time First Team All-American, including unanimous in 2010. Ngata was a 2005 consensus First Team All-American.

Mariners 7, Houston 4 — Julio Rodriguez hit an insurance, two-run homer in the ninth inning as Seattle (25-30) beat the host Astros (35-20).

The score was tied 4-4 after two innings and Seattle took the lead on Cal Raleigh’s RBI single in the fourth inning.

The Seattle bullpen held Houston scoreless for the final seven innings.

Raleigh earlier hit a three-run homer.

Houston’s Jose Altuve, Kyle Tucker and Chas McCormick hit solo homers after Robbie Ray.

WCWS finale — Coached by former Oregon coach Mike White, the Texas Longhorns beat Oklahoma State twice to advance to the Women’s College World Series (softball) final series.

They’ll play Oklahoma, which lost its third game of the year (to UCLA) and then returned to rout the Bruins 15-0 to advance to the final series.

Texas (47-20-1) and Oklahoma (57-3) play a three-game series for the championship, starting Wednesday.

All-Star Series — North and South coaches for the baseball Richardson Oregon All-Star Series, June 18-19 at OSU’s Goss Stadium, have been announced.

Leading the North team will be Joe Monahan of West Linn and JJ Stolsig of Canby.

The South will be managed by Scot McDonald of Crescent Valley and Jeff Stolsig of Lebanon.

The games feature the top Class 6A and 5A players. The June 18 game starts at 3 p.m., and June 19 game at 11 a.m.

Miller, Mason selected — Portland’s Asya Miller and Beaverton’s Eliana Mason have been selected as two of 16 players who have been named goalball sport ambassadors by the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes.

The USABA was recently certified as the national governing body of goalball.

Blind soccer is the other sport for which USABA is certified as the national governing body.

Rochelin signs — Oregon State has signed wing player Justin Rochelin to an athletics aid agreement, coach Wayne Tinkle announced.

He’s a 6-5 wing who attended Arizona State last season.

Said Tinkle: “He is a talented, tough-nosed guard that can play multiple positions on either end. He can really shoot the three and has a good midrange game. At 6 feet 5 and athletic, he’s also a strong finisher at the rim and loves to take on the challenge to guard the opposition’s best perimeter players, something we’re really looking forward to.

“We recruited him hard out of high school, so we’re pretty familiar with each other. He’s another high-character, high-achieving kid from a great family, and I know Beaver Nation will love what he brings.”

Pro baseball — The Hillsboro Hops are home June 7-12 against Everett. Games at Ron Tonkin Field start at 7:05 p.m. June 7-8 and June 11 and at 1:05 p.m. June 9, 10 and 12.

The Seattle Mariners are at T-Mobile Park for 11 games over 10 days beginning Friday, June 10 against the Boston Red Sox. The homestand: three games against Boston, three against the Minnesota Twins and five (including a June 18 doubleheader) against the Los Angeles Angels.

Pickles at home — The Portland Pickles summer collegiate wood-bat baseball team begins an extended run of home games at Walker Stadium in Lents Park on Friday, June 10. West Coast league power Corvallis is in town June 10-12. There are nonleague games June 15-16 before a June 17-19 series against Edmonton and a June 21-23 set against the Ridgefield Raptors.
